Mt. Diablo Summit Trail

5 of 5
A pretty fun single track. It starts at the summit parking lot and is singletrack to Devils elbow. Then there's a little stretch of sinletrack fro about 300 feet back to the road. Then the fun really starts. Some fun dh singletrack. Patches of loose rock, but seriously, where on Mt. Diablo isn't there? Go slow around curves until you make sure there are no hikers.
It's pretty cool, there are actually some semiberms around the higer corners. Once you pass acertain point, it's actually mostly hardpacked fireroad until you get to near Rock City. Once you get to Rock City (and if you know where Wall Point road is)head up towards Wall Point, but instead of heading down Wall point take a left on the Rock City Trail (it's pretty fun) and then ends up right at the start of the last part of the Summit trail (Dan Cook).
Overall, this is an easy downhill that only takes like 30-45 minutes to make it down to the gate.
Look, you may think that if you ride the summit trail (the non-Dan Cook) you'll easily get caught and fined 200 dollars. Not so at all. I thought that but finally decided to give it a test ride. And I looked down at the trail and saw about 15 different tire tracks on the trail. This trail gets ridden all the time!!!
Don't worry about hikers, they're all extremely nice and will let you pass. It's the horseback riding a$$holes that you have to worry about. Finally, a way that's offroad and goes straight down my side of the mountain.
Summary: Summit Trail IS a good trail. But it does'nt start at the summit parking lot, it starts at the bottom and goes up (what kind of biker drives up the mountain?)
Recommended Route: The single track through Dan Cook canyon is open to bikes. After crossing the bridge it turns to fire road and climbs steadily. From Live Oak campground you have to take the paved road about 1/4 mile to a junction on the left just past Wall Point road. For a nice detour out of Live Oak take West Fossil Ridge road about 3/4 mile out to a great vista point. They recently graded some new sections of fire road and its pretty loose from the Rock City up to the ranger junction but the views are spectacular. Stay off the 'no bikes' sections; there's no quicker way to wreck the sport than to freak out the hikers and horses. Climb to the top and you know what mountain biking is about. The ride down is sweet.
Other recommended trails in the same area: West Fossil Ridge; Wall Point; Frog Pond; won't tell you my favorite because nobody ever rides it and I want to keep it all to myself.
