Leona Canyon Open Space

I prefer to ride down the Leona trail from the college to the junction with the Artemisia trail and then up that to Skyline Blvd. Artemisia is about .7 miles and the first half is a tough climb. There is a bench just before the crux (a short stretch of old weatherbeaten pavement). Rest here if you wish and then continue up the flatter stretch above to Skyline Blvd. From here you can ride the road or the singletrack in the median strip either North to the Parkridge entry into Chabot or South to the Oakland Stable entry to Goldenrod trail in Chabot. A highly recommended warmup ride through a quiet area of the Oakland hills

Trail Directions
This area is just behind Merrit College. There is a parking area there, but I prefer to get there by parking by the casting ponds in the little park at the Redwood/Carson offramp from the 13 Freeway. Then I ride up Redwood Rd. to Campus Dr and up and around the college to the south parking area where the open space area begins. From here you can use the trails as an approach to Chabot Park or Redwood Park. This is all fire roads and not technical, but it is a good conditioning climb.

Summary:
These are all non-technical fire roads, but the grades aren't easy so they make fast descents or tough climbs depending on your direction of travel. A quiet area that doesn't get much use. Not a destination point, but good as an alternate route up to Chabot, Redwood, or Joaquin Miller.

Recommended Route:
There are just three trails here: Leona, Artemisia, and Pyrite. Leona runs South from Merrit College downhill to Keller Rd. Artemisia and Pyrite both intersect Leona midway. Pyrite drops down from Campus Dr.and Artemisia runs up toward Skyline.
