Cross Country Rider Summary: Good trial network for being in a major urban area. Nothing too technical, but fast and fun enough to keep experienced riders entertained.
This is a major urban park, and can be very active, and crowded at times. Definitely use discretion around blind corners, etc.
I'd have to say the best use of these trails is for the "after work with a few buddies" ride. Ususally meet at my place, mount lights and hit the park for a fast loop or two. End the ride at the Park Chalet, and have a beer and some food, then ride home.
I lived across the street (27th & Fulton) for two years, so this was a great riding resource to have in the city! And the park is almost entirely surrounded by bike shops if you should happen to have "a spot of bother" in your ride.
If you want to get creative, ride GGP to the beach. Head north up to Land's End. Dodge some golfers, wiggle yer way through the neighborhood, and up to the Golden Gate Bridge. Cross over to the Marin Headlands, then ride out to Bolinas/Fairfax. Connect the trails up to Mt.Tam, then up and over into Mill Valley. Take the roads, and bike paths back through town to the bridge. Makes for a good all day ride, at a moderate pace (might want to bring maps & lights). Definitely stop at Joe's Tacos, in Mill Valley, for some good grub and cold one! And you can always stop at Cafe Trieste, in Sausalito, for a little caffine and some baked goodies. Recommended Route: Fulton and Stanyon entrance is probably easiest way to start, but enter from anywhere and go ride! Other recommended trails in the same area: GGP to Headlands to Bolinas/Fairfax to Mt. Tam to Mill Valley. Back to city via roads and bike paths.

Weekend Warrior Summary: I haven't found this park to be very fun. It's a conveinent place for people living in the area. But if you want some real exciting stuff, I think this is not the place to go.

, from Brisbane, CA Summary: a lot of nice trails. Some single track if you can find it hidden along Fulton and Lincoln. Park your car on Lincoln and Ocean Beach. Recommended Route: Take the path along Lincoln. This is wide enough for the warm-up. Turns into single track and comes out on 19th Avenue.Turn left going to JFK to the trails along Fulton. Nice climbs and some downhill and jumps if you can find it. Watch out for the roots. Excellent ride for the beginner to the experienced wanting a nice ride not far away from home. Other recommended trails in the same area: San Bruno Mountain (2.5 miles loop. Skeggs. Mt. Tam. Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz

, from Sodom in the North Summary: check out the website and maps the reviewer below has done. i don't know him, but i think he's doing a really cool thing. and he's right--golden gate park has about ten miles of moderately (at times) technical singletrack that will keep mountain biking veterans happy, but would not be overly difficult for beginners. i pretty much learned to mountain bike in golden gate park, but graduated to the marin headlands and beyond. still, i ride a very short section of trail in the park almost every day on my way home from work. be ever advised, hower, that these trails are ILLEGAL and the SFPD has been know to aggressivly ticket riders, especially on the east and more heavily used end of the park. you have to ride all the trails in the park like there's trail user (even one squatting for a dump or with his wang hanging free) around the corner. you're riding in a heavily used park in the north-center of a major metropolitan area. one way around this is to get a light system and ride the trails in the park at night. it's not a good idea to do this alone--i will repeat, that this is a big park in the middle of a big city--and at the same time, it may take many hours for someone to find you if you've suffered a major injury in the park after dark. do what you can for the park. ride in it. chill out around the other users who are jogging or walking their dogs. pick up the big sticks that anti mountain bike hikers leave in the main trails to keep other riders from jacking themselves or their bikes on these obstacles. we have a jewel in the middle of our city and we don't want to lose it. Recommended Route: since i have been living one block away from the park for fifteen years, i have many, many routes my friends and i use. at any rate, we've almost always hit the trails at the stanyan entrance. Other recommended trails in the same area: the headlands and anywhere else with dirt trails or fire roads.
