Summary:
Not a mountain bike trail, but a great warm-up while getting to a lot of them in the Marin Headlands and Mount Tam. The west walkway is for bikes only and the better route (much more scenic). Pedestrians take the east walkway, but bikers use it too when the west sidewalk is closed M-F until 3:00 in the afternoon. You'll need a binger if you get stuck riding on the pedestrian side. Look how happy and in love all the pedestrians are, walking to and fro, holding hands on the sidewalk. Look how excited they are to be visiting San Francisco!! Look how four of them walk side-by-side taking the entire sidewalk! Look how none of them is paying much attention to anything or understands what "on your left" means... Same deal, although not as bad, for those people riding rent-a-bikes on the bikers side. These are identified by that black pouch hanging from the handlebars (never did catch what's written on them), and they seem to wander back and forth when there's a good westerly blowing into the Bay.

Recommended Route:
From SF: 25th Avenue to Lincoln Boulevard, up the Presidio then down to the bridge.
