Trail is fun. It is a little bit slippery from the small rocks so be careful.

RIde fireroad to train tracks and make left. RIde along tracks for about a mile (be sure you hit some of the downhill verts, really fun!) Next gate you come to, make right and go up the steep fireroad for a while(probably going to walk a bit. Then Make left where trail starts and is cut out of mountain. Ride to the top! water. GO down! Repeat over and over again. when you are done, opposite side of the tracks where shooters started and there will be another gate, fun little single track down and then you are in Calpoly AG land.

Summary:
We climbed to the top of Shooters on fire roads, then headed down. The descent was all single track. The trail had lots of loose rocks and some more techincal sections with bigger rocks/stair steps. It was a blast and I'd highly recommend this area if you ever visit SLO. Some of the riders we ran into said that the Morning Glory trail was even more awesome. We'll hit that one next time. It took about 1.5 hours to climb to the top of Shooters from where we started, and about 40 minutes to get back down.

Recommended Route:
We took Poly Canyon Road up to the train tracks, then turned right and took that to Stage Road. We then climbed Stage Road to the top of Cuesta Grade and headed up the ridge to the top of Shooters. We took Shooters down to the Yewks trail, then back on down through Poly Canyon the same way we came in.

Go to www.cccmb.org for a map of this area (rather than try to digest the spew I've laid out above).

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Montana de Oro State Park.

Summary:
This is a fun trail and good for intermediate to advanced beginner riders. However, it is not a downhill bomber run. Anyone who knows the area, knows that this trail is used to reach the top of the grade for acess to other, better, rides. Bombing down it and waiting for folks to move over is silly. If you want to ride down it for some reason, then please observe the rules of the trail. Also turn out for a workday with the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers once in a while (which will also help clue you in about the other, much better, trails on West Cuesta Ridge!).

Recommended Route:
Ride up Stenner Canyon, take the double track past the locked gate/bridge crossing on the left. Follow it up past the gate until it turns to single track. Follow this right on up, you can see Shooters climbing the entire grade right in front of you. If you ride down, take a left on the RR tracks and follow these to the head of Poly Canyon and take the various singletracks down and out Poly Canyon. This creates a better loop than going in and out the same canyon.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Morning Glory, Dairy Creek, Powerline, Coasters, Cerra Alto

Summary:
Did it today up to the TV towers from stener creak and this climb was the bomb, kicked arse for 5 miles then smoothed out to a fast grind for the last 2, hook it up to the poly loop and its close to 3K climbing in 20 miles, very sweet but do not FU!

Recommended Route:
Stener, cross the train tracks then bobsled it to the grind, which is choice, to the the top

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ridge trail/isley creak/ E boundry loop. steaper harder at times and much faster, but got insurance?

Summary:
Shooters is awsome. A good training climb that you can work as hard as you want (race a buddy, middle ring it, bust a lung racing yourself, or spin easy), and a fast downhill. Get hooked up with locals for more technical descents/longer rides/other routes. Oh, and there are great views from the top. Absolutely amazing on a clear day (which most days are in SLO). Provides acess to TV tower road, which can take you all the way to Cerro Alto.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Talk to a LBS or some locals.

Summary:
Pretty long uphill, not terribly difficult. Downhill is not that fun because you're always about 10' from a cliff, so it's scary to go very fast. Not many jumps either.

Recommended Route:
You can go up the grade side (boring fire road) or up the shooter's side (recommended)
