Lacks Creek BLM Management Area

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

The BLM's Lacks Creek Management Area contains a fine network of about 15 to 20 miles of multiuse singletrack and old logging roads. No one knows about it! Even the LBS in nearby Eureka didn't. I found out about it from the BLM office at Whitethorn, Calif., near the IMBA-designed Paradise Royale Trail.

By 2015, the BLM plans to add more miles of singletrack, making this a destination that might rival Paradise Royale. For more info, contact the BLM's Arcata, Calif., office.

Lacks Creek is an hour from Eureka and perhaps three hours from Redding. I wouldn't drive a whole day to visit it, but if you're already riding Paradise Royale (at Shelter Cove, Calif.), then it's worth it to check this network out.

Finding the trailhead will be challenging if you don't have these directions: Drive east from Arcata on Calif. Hwy. 299 some 20 miles, until you're about about 1/2 mile east of Lord Ellis Pass. Turn north onto the paved Bair Road. In about four miles, you'll see a sign for Hoopa. Turn east onto the 2wd dirt road there (still called Bair Road on maps but unsigned) and start climbing. In a few miles you'll see the entrance sign for Lacks Creek. Drive 1/2 mile up that road to the trailhead. Park and descend the shaded doubletrack that runs downhill to the west. You can get a brochure and map from the BLM's Arcata office.

Summary:
This is a nice combination of good-quality intermediate singletrack and logging roads. The BLM plans to expand it by 2015 with a lot more multiuse singletrack.

Unfortunately, it was so cold (below freezing) when I visited it in December 2013, and my clothing was so inadequate, that I could tolerate only two hours of riding, so I saw only about 1/3 of the trail mileage. But what I saw was appealing. Despite its being unknown, Lacks Creek is a regional destination, no question, and it may become one for all of Northern California if the BLM expands the singletrack by 2015 as it says it intends to.

There are some mildly technical sections on the singletrack and some of the logging road climbs are steep. Overall, its challenges are intermediate, but advanced mountain bikers will like it. I wouldn't bring rank beginners here.
