Beartrap Basin Trail

This is the type of trail that is the reason we love to ride in the Sierra. Steady climbs rewarded by great views, fast downhills, and beautiful meadows full of wild flowers and surrounded by aspens.

Summary:
Rode this trail at the end of June. The ground is still a little damp this time of year and everything is real green. Later in the season, things start turning brown and parts of the trail get real torn up and dusty from all the 4-wheelers, but it's still a great ride. Because of the rocky condition of the trails, I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.

Recommended Route:
Bill's directions are real good. For more info, stop in at the Bear Valley Adventure Company and buy the trail book. It lists this and quite a few other trails and gives lots of detail.

Quite a few...look in the trail book.

Summary:
The climb up through Corral Hollow is steady but easy except for the last 1/8 mile which is steep and rutted. Once at the top of climb, there are awesome views from the ridge into the headwaters of the Mokelumne River. After a short ride on the ridge, follows a great downhill ride into Bear Trap Basin via a rutted jeep road which provides some surprisingly technical riding. Easy climb out of Bear Trap Basin. Once at top of hill make first left and then next right onto some sweet single-track that returns you back to the Corral Hollow trail. Corral Hollow trail back down to the Highway is fast with some great jumping opportunities.

Recommended Route:
Corral Hollow 1/2 mile south of Bike shop on Highway 4

Summary:
Classic Sierra ride - a great one spring to late fall.

Recommended Route:
Begin by climbing up Corral hollow from Highway 4. The first part of the climb is steady with a few dips to catch your breath and ending with a short very steep and loose section at the top of the first ridge. From here you ride along corral ridge on a rolling jeep road with spectacular views of the Mokelumne canyon
wilderness. The ridge ends with a moderate climb and the fun begins with a fast long downhill into Bear Trap Basin. There is an old cabin in the meadow surrounded by Huge Aspen trees - a great lunch spot or
emergency shelter should you need it. The jeep trail leads up and out of the basin where the challenge is to find the single track which connects you back to
Corral Hollow. Look for a old jeep trail about 100' before you reach the top of the climb that doubles back around 150 degrees to the left(if you start to descend you've gone too far). Head up the jeep trail until it tops out and look for the single track on the right marked by logs or stone ducks. Descend this trail crossing some granite slabs and connect with the Corral Hollow trail turn right for a fast downhill and your home free!
The local bike shop - Bear Valley Adventure Company offers a great giude books of this and many other local trails (209)753-2834.
