Snow Summit

Downhill, fire-roads and single-track. EXCELLENT ridding! Probably some of the best in SoCal. There's riding for all levels -- beginner to pro. Be aware: during the busier seasons, weekends and holidays you'll find plenty of hikers...use caution. If you like downhilling -- this is THEE spot! If you like cross-country with a-w-e-s-o-m-e views -- this is the spot.

Trail Directions
Take highway 18 all the way through Big Bear city. Go south on Summit Blvd until it ends. You'll see the lift just to the right. Team Big Bear has a shop to the left of the lift. They have some very nice downhill bikes for rent.

Summary:
Took the lifts up this past weekend. Despite it only being the second weekend they were open, the trails were in really good shape although very dusty. Lots of steep, technical riding up here still despite them closing it to downhillers.

Recommended Route:
Upper and lower fallline, and 1E01

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Santa Ana River Trail

Summary:
I've ridden here once for each of the last 8 years and for me, it has diminished in quality over the last 3. The resort trails have gotten wider, especially on the turns, and bumpier. DHers will still find them fun and fast but they are more like ATV trails.

The off resort trails like Pine Knot, Pirates and Cabin 89 are still good, true singletrack. Upper and Lower Falline have challenging rock gardens but have also become wider by people creating new lines or going around the rocks.

From now on, I'll save my money, pedal up the Forest Service roads and leave the lift to the DHers.

Recommended Route:
Ride up the forest service roads (can't remember the numbers but ask at the bike shop) to Pineknot trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Grey's Peak trail to Hannah Flat campground is a lot of fun. Do the out and back from Grout Bay by Fawnskin

Summary:
One sweet single track, 1E01 (Pine Knot Trail). One challenging rock garden descent: turn right by big rock on Lower Fall Line.
One fast and easy single track: Pirates of the Caribbean. The rest is mediocre at best, with lots of sand to slow you down and make for mushy riding. Recent bulldozing has left a lot of trails near the top soft and slow. The countryside is beautiful, and the drive up to Big Bear is almost better than the riding. The 5 "bitches" are not named correctly, and should be called the 1 "rolling and easy" slope. There are far more challenging trails around SoCal, but at least the views and countryside at Big Bear are nice, and don't forget that the air is clear and clean. :)
