Dry Fork Trail

A good singletrack for the first mile, then degrades into more expert terrain. There are a lot of dismounts and dabs in places, but is a fun challenge to count the fewest times you have to dab. There has been a lot of improvements on the hardest sections, and the trail is continually improving. The trail finally ends at a major gravel road, and turning left on this leads to a short easy climb followed by a big chainring downhill back to the dam.
I-5 North of Redding to Hwy. 153, to Shasta Dam. Park at the west end of the dam. Ride into the shoreline and watch for the trail leading up from the high water level. This is not accessible during times of a full reservoir!
Summary: Just a comment on this trail. Because of security concerns, you are not allowed to drive over the dam without a permit (which must be obtained ahead of time. You can ride over the dam, through the guardhouse, subject to search, so that's not too big of a deal.
Other recommended trails in the same area: There's a new trail called the Sacramento Water ditch trail that goes from the parking lot (east end) at Shasta Dam to Walker Mine Road at 9 miles, from there, there's sevral trails you can take, including the Hornbeck Trail, or the Lower water ditch trail. These are nice, easy beginner trails, but very scenic.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: This would be a fun trail if it were ever maintained. Its rarely used, smooth, twisty and fun. Very little climbing and only a couple dismounts in washd out areas. During the summer when its hotter then the surface of the sun out you can go swimming mid ride. However there are two drawbacks to the trail. It is usally covered in black berry bushes. Not fun, trust me. If the lakes high and you exit the trail by the "trail head" you have to A)walk through water for a good quarter mile B) scramble along a cliff. Ask aroudn the see if there trails clear...
Recommended Route: Do the full fireroad/trail loop clockwise, and ONLY when the lake is low, trust me.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Challenging trail with many technical rocky sections and steep, bumpy drops. Trail drops to the lake on the right throughout the entire ride with some off camber sections to watch out for. It ends with a short fire road climb but most of the ride is on secluded and scenic singletrack.
Recommended Route: After passing the dam follow shoreline, looking up carefully at the manzanita to your left for a sign marking the trailhead. (about .25 miles).
Other recommended trails in the same area: Shasta Lake Area: Packer Bay, Bailey Cove, Clikapudi
