Graded single track, fairly easy climbing through beautiful alpine forest topping out on a volcanic ridge. Best connection from Bear Valley to the Lake Alpine and Mt. Reba single track trail system. A guide book detailing this and 19 other rides in Bear valley is available from the local bike shop - Bear Valley Adventure Company for $4.95 (209)753-2834. Call the shop for current conditions and weather.

Summary:
Rode the trail from Bear Valley towards Lake Alpine, then the Granite trail up to the jeep road, down the jeep road to the Alpine lake trail and around the lake. All the trails were beautiful and challenging with rocks, logs, soft dust and places you had to walk your bike.

Rode back to Bear Valley via the ski area access highway and turned of downhill on a steep singletrack. This trail is difficult but very enjoyable. It is steep in places, is always narrow and twisty, is across some slickrock and has several drop offs.

Recommended Route:
Describe your ability and interest to the people at the sports shop in Bear Valley. The will give you very nice directions. Buy the map guidebook if you are going to ride more than once.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
It would take several days to ride all of the singletrack around Bear Valley.
The high altitude makes these trails tough. Spend time to acclimate before riding.

Summary:
The trail starts just east of the Bear Valley Adventure Company. I highly recommend starting out there, and asking the friendly shop personnel about the local rides. This is the trail they recommend to most newbies to the area. I told them I was looking for a 10-15 mile ride of moderately technical singletrack. This one was perfect for me and my riding buddy. It was 9 miles, but at 7,000ft...it was a great distance with a nice balance of climbing.

The first half of the ride was my favorite. You climb up from the BV Adventure Center to Lake Alpine.

Beware, there are several sections that do have moderately difficult rock gardens...especially on the second half of the trail where they become VERY difficult, and more me...unrideable.

The views on this ride are incredible.

Recommended Route:
Buy the trail booklet from the bike shop and ask the shop personnel for advise on where to start. We started just east of the tennis courts which are located east of the BV Adventure Company and on the south side of Hwy 4. From there the trail climbs up to a campground, and you cross to the north side of Hwy 4. This will take you to the top of the climb and to the east shore of Lake Alpine. From here you cross Hwy 4 to the south side and start back. We took Emmigrant Gap trail, which is the more difficult track back.

Summary:
Singe track trails are easy climbing, moderatey technical, but relatively short. I recommend the Bear Trap Basin ride first as a warm-up (8-miles) and then finish up with the shorter rides surrounding Lake Alpine and Bear Valley. All of the rides in the Bear Valley area are really scenic and I was alone on the trails late in October.

Recommended Route:
Trail head across Highway 4 from Bear Valley bike and ski shop. Check out their bike trails guidebook and spend some $ in their store.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bear trap basin, immigrant trail

Summary:
Challenging Climb. If you're from the bay area, beware.. the elevation is 7000 feet and will take a day or two to get used, so don't go first thing after the 4 hour drive. I used to work at Bear Valley Ski Resort and let me tell you, the 4 hour drive is not all that bad. In the Summer you also might want to check out the resort for things happening around the mountain. 99 they held the knobular world cup series that also took place in Sqwua. Oh, and another thing.. Trail not open in winter unless you feel like snow biking.

Recommended Route:
Take Side trails, they are the most fun. If you're looking for paved easy-stuff, you can stick to the new paved trail around most of lake alpine. Otherwise, prepare to get lost :)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
oops, see above.
