Almanor Trail
2 reviews
 3.5 of 5

Paved. Open to non-motorized uses only. Not technically challenging at all -- its paved and flat with one low hill. But great scenery on a very family friendly ride. Several campgrounds along the route and swimming coves. A general store/cafe with cold drinks and snacks is only 1/2 mile off the trail in Prattville.

Summary:
Lake Almanor Recreation Trail...

Poison Spider Trail, it's not. It's a fun family ride, nothing technical. You get 8' of blacktop with the root heaves marked in white paint, so pretend it's a rock garden. The trail runs along the west shore of Lake Almanor, up and down, in and out with frequent views of the lake. The good views have bike racks and benches for your enjoyment.

It's not really level. Always going up and down a bit. I was hitting 14mph on the hairpin turns. Did the section from Rocky Point CG by the dam up to where it runs inland to get around a bunch of summer homes.

With the clouds building, I headed back for lunch at that point. Found it again in the USFS campgrounds - Almanor and Almanor N - some miles north up the lake. By then it was pouring, so ... next year.

Found a trailhead - Dyer View - which does not appear on the maps. It is a bit north of Rocky Pt. CG. Parking, toilets, trash, benches, racks, etc. Bring water. N40d 12.153' x W121d 08.171'

There is limited trailhead parking at Rocky PT CG and at the Almanor CG.

Summary:
Mellow and easy. I ride here when I want to ride but don't want to spend all day on a backcountry workout or dodge cars on a highway. It's great on hot summer days. When you get heated just stop anywhere along the shore and jump in. Lots of use during summer weekends when campers in the area use it. If you are spending a weekend with kids and the family at Lake Almanor bring your bikes. Rating is one for difficulty, four for enjoyability. Overall 3

Recommended Route:
I usually park at the Almanor Campground boat ramp and ride up and back the entire length.
