Summary:
Great single track downhill on Thornton. Not for the unfit, the climb up to the top and then along the ridgeline requires plenty of effort. The climb and ridgeline parts of the ride aren't great riding, they're fireroads and you're doing it for the downhill. Total ride time about 2 hours on a XC bike. The ride had very little mud, plenty of very small creek crossings. As I did this so early in the season, the trail had only just been cleared of winter fallen tress and there was a large amount of debris still on the trail. I imagine this would be a different trail in summer with a better worn track to follow.

Recommended Route:
As the first reviewer has mentioned, ride down Thornton, don't climb it, it is better going up one of the other MUT that are essentially 4WD tracks up with a more manageable gradient on the climb.

Summary:
best legal single track in Humboldt (not a lot of it up here; hence high rating)

head to bull creek and then climb to the top of Thornton MUT.
5 miles down well graded, terrain includes redwoods, mixed forests and meadows. Usually muddy except for summer. Be surprised if you see anyone else :-)

beautiful Humboldt County...

Recommended Route:
up Pole-Line to avoid mud, down Thornton...
leave early the sun drops behind the mountains to the west-
