Shepherd Saddle road

 3 of 5

From North Fork Drive, Three Rivers, CA, proceed up road to approx. 8-mile mark, then head up onto BLM land via dirt road, hopping a metal gate partway up. At Shepherd Saddle, hop metal gate onto Sequoia National Park land, and descend ending at the Generals Highway just above the park entrance station.

Summary:
Done as a loop, you can park near the North Fork Bridge and ride either direction.

if riding your bike up Hwy 198 into the park, you should be prepared to pay a $5 entrance fee, but in practice you just wave and say hello to the Ranger. Take your first left (Sycamore Road) and go through three fences (walkthrough, pedestrian gate, and unlocked gate) on your way up.

The unpaved road is presently in excellent shape on both the Park side and BLM side of the Saddle. Maximum grade is perhaps 12%, except for the bottom furlong of the road on the North Fork side, where it is steeper, with loose rocks.

Roadies find North Fork Drive something of a challenge, but you are on a mountain bike. So, no problem!

Recommended Route:
This ride is appropriate for beginners; the grade is difficult only for a short section.
