Trail Lake Trail
1 reviews
 4 of 5

Funny name for a trail, but it goes past Trail Lake, hence the name. Some guidebooks and websites claim this trail goes into the Caribou Wilderness and is closed to bikes. THIS IS NOT TRUE! A portion of the trail forms the Wilderness Boundary, but the trail itself is outside and is open to bikes. The Forest Service maintains this trail as a bike trail. This trail is all pure singletrack through dense forest. Elevation is around 6500 feet. Rocky in a few places but all ridable. The north end of the trail is again on Forest Road 10. You can turn around and go back or follow the 10 road back to Echo Lake. The 10 road is a well maintained gravel road and you will be sharing the road with other vehicles driving too fast for gravel. The road route adds about 9 miles.

Summary:
A heavy blowdown event in April 2003 left the south half of this trail well blocked by numerous trees. The north half is mostly open and in good condition. Cumming Springs is roughly the halfway point. Trail Lake is a beautiful mountain lake.

This trail was included in the Boxer Wilderness Bill for the sole purpose of closing it to bikes. More bikers need to ride this trail to demonstrate its importance to the mountain biking community.

Recommended Route:
I usually ride south to north, and follow the 10 Road back to the start for a total of 13.5 miles.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Star Lake is south of this trail by a couple of miles. Star Lake is accessible by a 4WD road from the south or a short singletrack from the 10 road.
