Tahoe Rim Trail at North Tahoe
4 reviews
 3 of 5

East from Brockway Summit the trail climbs mostly towards Martis Peak. There is about ten miles of trail before the wilderness boundary at Rifle Reak. There is a nice side road to Martis Peak where there is a lookout structure. Lots of veiws of the lake from high above. There is no water on the TRT between Watson lake and Grey Lake. It is a very challanging trail for some sections. West of the highway, the trail is mountainous up and down to Watson Lake which is a not so pristine pond. Then on to Tahoe City with options on the Western States Trail. It's hot and dry in the summer. Bring lots of water.

Summary:
Great trail, great workout. On May 28, 2006 I rode east from the Hwy in 4 inches of fresh SNOW. At the first fork I went left to the view point. Awesume views of Lake Tahoe. I then continued on the trail towards Martis peak. I started to hit large patches of snow under the fresh snow on the trail so I headed back. The decent was very challeging with all the snow.

enjoy yours

Summary:
This is a nice ride, it will test your legs (lots of climbing at high altitude) and your technical skills (Steps and uphill rock gardens). The trail was build with the hiker in mind but still fun to ride. This ride does not have great views of Lake Tahoe, so take it for the ride not the views. If your in north shore Tahoe this is a must to do. Enjoy. I rode from brockway summit to Watson Lake and back 12.5 miles took me about 2 hours I was alone and use the map lot to not get lost markers on the trail suck.

Recommended Route:
I rode from bockway summit on the rim trail to Watson Lake and took Jeep roads back with some back traking on the rim trail. Do buy a map at any of the local shops either in Truckee or Tahoe City it was $10.00 at Paco's Bike Shop in Truckee. Locals don't like to tell you about there trail to much.

Summary:
Rode from brockway summit to tahoe city, 19 miles of hell with lots(LOTS) of climbing, very rocky, in some spots unrideable for quite a ways, several times trail seems to disapear into the rocks. Wouldnt recomend it for anything less than an advanced rider wishing to punish himself.

Recommended Route:
TRT fom brockway to Tahoe city

Other recommended trails in the same area:
TRT from Brockway to Martis peak, Hole in ground, emmigrant, TRT from Mt. Rose meadows to Tunnel creek

Summary:
First, go to The Back Country in Truckee and get a map, along with good advice and maps of other trails from the helpful staff. This trail is classic Tahoe high country, pretty, with a few views of the lake. It's more up and down and more rocky than I expected--there is only one level stretch in the entire route, and it's short--the rest is moderately to very rocky climbing. I figured it at around 2000 ft. RT. The TH is a short throw past Brockway Summit, and if you choose to start down the paved road at Brockway itself you'll cut off a moderately steep first mile or so--just take the first singletrack that angles off the pavement to the right, can't miss it. Watson Lk isn't spectacular but it's a nice turn-around--don't expect to be alone, since a dirt road allows campers and fishermen to drive there. This also means you have a pretty easy ride out if you overestimated your endurance. All in all, neither as beautiful nor as difficult as Hole in the Ground nearby, but well worth doing.

Recommended Route:
From Brockway to Watson Lk and back
