Skyline to Santiago Peak
4 reviews
 4 of 5

Stay on Skyline which will turn into Main divide truck trail. You'll pass Eagle road, Bedford rd. and maple springs before you get to Modjeska peak--but it ain't over yet. You'll be able to see Santiago peak which is just a few miles further. Once you get to the top and head back down, I like to come out at Bedford cyn. which drops you out at I15 freeway/Weireck road. Go left and under the freeway, you'll end up at 7-Oaks store/deli. Here you can sit down and eat/drink(Beer/Wine) and call to have someone pick you up and take you back to your vehicle. If not, just take main divide back down to Skyline.I suggest at LEAST a Mule (100 oz)+ I usually bring 2 large water bottlesw/cages and several energy bars to be safe. This one is for those of you who can hang, because it's a burner!

Summary:
This has always been a trail that I've wanted to ride just to say that I had been up it. It is one of those trails that you have to be in a certain mood to ride. Its not exciting but the aerobic workout is great and the view from the top is awesome. It's pretty much all fire road with very little shade.

Recommended Route:
We started at the end of skyline drive and rode up skyline to the divide, went right and up to the radio towers. we then turned around and rode up to the golf ball thing and then took skyline back down.

Summary:
This is just FYI... The "rock & mortar ruins" at the top are the remains of "Beeks Place". An old hunting cabin that used to have a pool, detached garage, outhouse and guest house along with beautiful landscaping. I did some research and found some old photos. It was also used temporarily as a Forest Service fire lookout. The steel towers are still in place. The "huge golfball" is the Santa Ana Doppler Radar site designed to provide low-level detection of severe weather approaching the metro L.A. area. Please be careful and mindful of Beeks Place when looking around. 12 years ago when I started riding, Beeks Place was still pretty much intact. Over the years careless mountain bikers and folks visiting in their off-road vehicles have torn it to shreds. What a shame. I live in Colorado now but get to visit my old stomping grounds fairly often. It's a fantastic place with a rich history. Take some time and research the little things and you'll be delighted to find the history behind that section of the Cleveland Nat'l Forest.

Summary:
Skyline is basically a constant climb on a very wide and curvacious fire road. The view is great once get up a few hundred feet or so. Watch out for cars and trucks coming down the hill (oftentimes unaware of the existance of mountain bikes). This ride can be short or a days adventure. It is not a trail with a lot of single tracks that you can blaze. Some may say it is bordering on boredom. I personally enjoy it for a solo ride. Skyline is a trail for anyone. Beginners would like it if they can go their own pace. Advance riders would like for the work out. You can work yourself as much as you want on the climb. Great place for intervals if your into that.
About five miles up there is a great view and places to rest. Some old rock and morter ruins near the top and a radio antenna base that looks like a huge golf ball.
The downhill is the same way you came up. However there are single tracks about 35% of the way if you choose to take them. They cut in and out of the fire road. Very fun. Again, Watch out for motorized vehicles.
Have fun, bring lots of water.

Same route as above.
