Ride up the fire road, and at the first junction, go right. This is where you drop your seatpost and buckle your helmet. Make sure you've bled your brake lines recently and you don't have a severe deficiency of fluid and abudance of air (personal story)
Bomb about 1/2 mile down the road until you hit the dam of the Mariposa Town Reservoir. There is a snaking, loose, off camber, steep, rock-drop mottled single track to your right. If you are an XC weenie, don't fret, you only have to carry your bike for a few hundred yards. At the bottom of the singletrack, you will hit the same road you were previously on. Follow it until you get to the filtering station. When you hit the gate, dive left, through the spillway. Watch out for that first ditch and culvert. Ride up the other side of the spillway, turn right, follow road down hill. You will end up back in town if you continue downhill. If you wat to end your ride with some urban assault, go to the high school (make sure it isn't monday through friday from 8:35 to 3:45-they can be pretty harsh). If that's not your thing-take another lap. It should only take you 20 mins or so.
Enjoy
Park in Mariposa (or wherever the hell you want) and ride north on 140. Pass smith road (on your left)For reference, this is where the Mariposa hospital is, but I would be a sadist to recommend anything other than biting the bullet and driving all the way to Merced.
A 1/4 mile later, having passed the old scenic highway junction on the right, you will see a large gravel turnout on the right. You will see a gate at the north end of the turnout. To the immediate right is a narrow passageway for your bike.
You are at the beginning.
Recommended Route: forget the previous routings. start in the region of the high school, up the hill to the filtering plant, the utility district doesn't mind if you ride back there (manager is a serious rider). beyond the filtering plant to the base of the dam, up the sharp rise, over the gate, up and then a very rarely used dbl track to your right heading downhill toward the over flow spill way. Across the overflow toward your right and up the other side to another dbl track. uphill and over a gate and then uphill to a county dirt road (Slaughterhouse Rd). Go up the road about a 1/2 mile and on your left is a PGE power line track. Tell PG&E to take a leap they only have easement rights and down't own the property, the owner is Van der Ahe and he doesn't seem to mind. This goes up severely (there are a number of laterals that come of the PG&E line over to Slaughterhouse that ease the pain of the severe climb but they are impossible to detect from Slaughterhouse and should be explored from the power line trail) to a bowl area which puts you on a dbl track that winds around and comes out on a lower ridge with a single track up hill to your right. This will put you up on the top of the ridge and then down the dbl track to a gate on your right that may be open over the gate and then dbl track to Allred Rd. None of this is overly technical but is a good local workout. The only areas that ever make me think twice are the exposed rock ledges at the overflow spillway and the steep ascent up the power line dbl track. Back to town any number of ways. Probably 5 miles to the top.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Big Trees, 007, Shuteye Peak, Single tracks above the third section of 007.

Summary: so the trail pretty much sucks. I was just excited at having found a new place to ride in the fire-road infested mariposa county... Re-read my description, and I guess it does sound better than it is... Well, I'm working on a trail from fergusen mine dump to the south fork canyon because there's no decent riding around here...will keep all posted...
Recommended Route: yeah, yeah

Summary: Very disappointing. The submitter made it sound like a great bomibng down road to a sweet single track. It is very far from that. Not very steep roads and a weak, short single track section of maybe 200. Not worth doing.
Recommended Route: started 1/4 mile higher on hwy 140 on the old highway that is growing over.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hit Cove, Foresta Rd, Gin Flat to Crane Flat to Foresta to El Portal

Summary: Dont bleed your breaks or buckle your helmet unless you like dirt roads. Unless I took a wrong turn (IM pretty sure I didnt) I would say this trail is weak its just a dirt road with a few hundred feet of single track. I didnt like it its just mainly flat dirt road. Although the highschool has some sweet stairs, the stairs are the only cool part of the trail. Note: dont go there on school days
Recommended Route: go down th dirt road turn right at the first inter section go on that trail till it hits a dirt road go on the dirt road and go up the spil way, youll see the high school go there.
Other recommended trails in the same area: None that i Know of except for 007 by Bass Lake
