Ridden Trail: Every few months

, from Arcata, CA Summary: The trail start out as a wide graveled path...kinnd of a drag to ride but it soon turns to sweet singletrack. The climb continues for about 2 miles, then continues along the ridgeline. Along the way is a backcountry campsite that makes a great stopping place. The downhill is an old mining road that is slowly turning into singletrack. In the spring there are numerous spring crossings. The wildflowers and views of the Siskiyous are incredible. The downhill is not steep, but it is down none-the-less and is some of the best riding on the North Coast. At the bottom you must cross a stream that can be deep. I usually avoid it until at least June. A cold, refreshing swimming hole just upstream from the crossing cools you down. I like to ride the South Fork road back. The headwinds are strong, but there is a 40+ mph downhill section and incredible views of the Smith River. Immediately across from the starting point parking lot is another ride-Craig's Creek Trail. This is a 3.5 mile out and back ride, but is my favorite trail ever. It is fairly technical and has lots of steep climbs and decents, but the extreme exposure is what makes it fun. The trail is literally cut into the side of the STEEP mountainside. In all, both rides equal about 26 miles, give or take and require 2-3 hours of actual ride time is you are pushing it. Recommended Route: About a quarter of a mail off of 199 on south fork road there is a river access parking lot that provides a great base for starting out. Follow south fork road to Howland Hill road until you get to the trailhead.

, from Walnut Creek, CA Summary: Great ocean view from the summit (when the permafog lifts). Overall a great adventure for an area that doesn't have much advertised legal single track. If the 26+ mile version is a bit long, do the ride one way or as the original post and come back on South Fork Road Recommended Route: We camped at Jeddidiah State Park for the weekend, and started from the campground. We rode to the South Fork Bridge off of 199, but headed went right at the intersection and headed west down the paved then dirt road through the park. Started at a trail head for Little Bald Hills trail and started climbing in earnest! Other recommended trails in the same area: Ossagon Trail
