Hogan Trail

This is very technical singletrack, and should NOT be ridden by beginners. The trail is only 10 miles (out & back), but it will work you. There's a lot of short, steep ups and downs, and not a lot of high-speed sections. If you can ride this trail, you can ride just about anywhere! Very hot in the summer, with no water available on the trail. SCAAB (Stockton Cyclists Are Always Bleeding) is continuing to work on this trail to make it longer. Please wear your helmet!
Take Highways 12 or 26 out of Stockton to Valley Springs. At the four way stop, continue on 12 another 1/4 mile to Lime Creek/So. Petersburg. Turn right, then turn right again on So. Petersburg. Follow this for approx. 2 miles to Acorn East Campground. Park in the Day Use area. Follow the signs to the trail head. The signs will not tell you of the beginning of the trail (yet), so keep a lookout to your left for singletrack. If you find yourself on a wide, easy trail, (the Rim Trail) you missed the singletrack and will need to double back.
Summary: THIS PLACE SUCKS, ANY PLACE NEAR STOCKTON SUCKS. NO DIRECTION, OVER GROWN SINGLE TRACK, YOU CAN TELL ANY ONE WITH ANY SENSE WOULDNT WASTE AN HOUR TO DRIVE HERE AND RIDE HERE, ITS A COW PASTURE FOR BIKES. MY S WORKS AND I WILL CONTINUE DRIVING TO SAC AREA OR S.C. STOCKTON SUCKS. I GAVE IT A 5 IN TECHNICAL RATING BASED ON THE FACT THAT YOU NEED GPS TO FIND TRAILS THAT GO LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES.NO ONE RIDES IN STOCKTON,GO RAIDERS
Recommended Route: RECOMMENDED ROUTE? SANTA CRUZ,CA THE END.
Other recommended trails in the same area: DRIVE TO S.C.

Summary: Good singletrack. Challenging and a long continuous course. No real possibilities of exiting early except just turning around or continuing on. Quite a lot of climbing, so you're really gonna get in shape. Moderately rocky (be prepared for your tires to bounce around, and get some slime tubes to reduce your chances of getting flats). Bring water bottles or camelbaks because it is hot (no trees) and no water fountains. Dont even bother riding out there on hot 90+ days.
Recommended Route: Once we got to the Acorn East campground day use parking, my friend and I had a terrible time reading the directions on this website to get to the trail head. We couldn't find it, so we actually snaked through the campgrounds (quite far, maybe a mile) until we saw dirt singletrack trails up above on a hill close to the water. We pushed our bikes through some debris and dead grass and broke into the trail at a low point because it was easy. There are probably other places to break onto the trail though, I just didn't find any easier way.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This trail is pretty technical with several fast hairpin turns, so check your brakes before you head up, you'll need them. There are several areas to flank off the main trail and explore or find a nice area to swim. No tree cover, so its perfect for the sun addict, but a fair skin's nightmare so bring protection. not a very scenic trail, so if your looking for beauty keep driving up the mountain to the high country. Bring lots of water, with the heat and lack of trees dehydration can sneak up on you. The trail is well taken care of and seems to be regularly maintained. you also will notice trail markers that give you the option of choosing advanced, intermediate, or beginner. this will keep the beginners out of the more experienced rider's way and save the skilled rider's time on finding the most challenging trail without following a beginner trail anticipating the DHs and technicality that won't be found in the direction they're heading. Wouldn't that be frustrating! Anyways it's an overall good trail. Try it and find out for yourself.
Recommended Route: shortest possible
Other recommended trails in the same area: Penn Mine trails, its close to Hogan, go west out of Valley Springs to the town of Campo Seco. Go through the town and make a left on Arkansas Ferry. Follow this road until you come to a clearing, park there and explore.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: This is a great technical trail. The few previous comments are wrong. Somebody must want to keep you off these trails so they can ride them. Riders can go easy around the hills on rolling singletrack, or go over the hill on technical, steep switchbacks. Well worth riding. Not much tree coverage for hot days though.
