Goat Trails and Indian Trails

Continue climbing on sweet single track variations, that all climb up, rejoining 2 track briefly to a T junction at a saddle. Left is fun dh back to Cathedral City, continue right up short steep hill, just before summit take single track contouring right, then go left, then right again for a mile of whoop de doos, then left in a small hollow for a few more whoops, leading to an obvious trail junction with an IMBA sign. Several variations are all fun to explore..you can't get lost here as you can see the valley all the time. But to continue the major ride, go left up steeply (push ?) then ride a beautiful narrow ridge, then climb to Murray Peak. Return the same way...all DH !! Yippee...Tough tires and tubes a good idea, extra tubes, lots of water. Ride in the early morning..its cool, watch for big horn sheep, coyotes, roadrunners, mtn quail. This area is NOT closed during big horn mating...so go ride it. 1 1/2 hrs to 5 hours depending how far you go.
Begin at Vons grocery parking lot, Palm Springs, Hwy 11 and Gene Autry Drive. Ride up the obvious dirt road, passing the initial gate, toward big water tanks visible from the hwy., continue as the road bends right and climbs steep up a draw. Just beyond the top of this climb...take single track that veers right and uphill (don't take the dh tracks off to the right side)
Summary: The before mentioned golf course and housing plans are currently up for vote for Palm Springs residents. In the meantime, the trails are doing well after all the rain we've had.
Recommended Route: From Vons Romrock shopping center: Take the fireroad up from the left of the parking lot, through the gate, and up several climbs. As you crest a particularly steep section, you will see a singletrack heading off the right side across a small valley. This trail criss crosses the fireroad and become more technical of a climb. You can keep climbing to a saddle of a ridge and descend Thielman Trail, or return the way you came.
Other recommended trails in the same area: North Lykken trail(where Ramon Rd. ends, for trials type riding), Vandeventer and Hahn Buena Vista off Dunn Rd. (out of Cathedral Cove), and Art Smith Trail.

Summary: These trails are still in danger of being lost. The Christian Theme park ran out of funding, and the land is for sale, cheap. This land borders Cathedral Cove and the Goat trails. The strong possibility is that the actual goat trails will be obliterated for a Golf Course and 1200 houses and rooms for a hotel. The Palm Hills Resort is already going through the proper channels with the planning department. If you want to let your voice be heard, e-mail the planning department at Planning@ci.palm-springs.ca.us
Let them know that this irreplaceable trail system is unique and is wanted. Other groups are weighing in on the subject, but mountain biker's have very little options in this area for terrain. These are the only trails that are open year round.

Summary: This was a awesome ride. Beautiful desert trails and great vistas. Very challanging with about 2200' climb to the summit with tight switch backs. Not often one gets a chance to ride this kind of terrain. Had a smile on my face the whole way.
Recommended Route: Vons as stated but came back further north riding by the Hope cottage then single track all the way down into trailer park and out. Go up at vons and tred lightly through the north route on private property ( downhill) This ride is only 4 mi away from centeral P.S.

Summary: No casinos going in here, just some big huge christian wonderland. complete with hotels, convention center, amphitheater, carnival, etc. it will never get re-zoned successfully, but they will tie up the land with fences forever anyway. Nobody patrols the area, ride where you like. Some of the fencing has obvious singletracks around the edges or thru holes in it. Residents in the area have backyard steps leading up onto the water district wash road and nobody cares about them. Ride on, bicycle people!
