Cindy Whiteheads Trail

The Climb up is steep, but short, after cresting u will roll out on a slow 300yd decent, look for a narrow singletrack to the left and a brown sign that indicates a voluntary closure between jan 30 and june 30 for bighorn humping season......its all good

Summary:
Cindy's seperates the eggs from the eggless. closure still in affect, although voluntary and ridiculous, the BLM still act like they own it.

Recommended Route:
the review from Richard below is great, but does not describe the Cindy Whitehead trail that this review was intended for, for more accurate directions see
the 'Goat Trails' review

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Art Smith, Palm Canyon, Boo Hoff(known locally as brewha trail)

Summary:
Discovered while on roadtrip. Simply called LBS in area and was given great directions from I-10.
Climb was a nice moderate fire road grind, reached top to enjoy a spectacular sunset!
Advice in previous review not to decend on singletrack to left prior to reaching peak is well advised. (Walked out of canyon after 1/2 mile decent on steep goat trail. Unridable accent.).
Most memorable part of ride was decent down singletrack on last 1-2 mile portion that drops you back to within 1/4 of start. Ultra steep, rocky singletrack with several drops along way. High pucker factor, E-ticket decent!

Recommended Route:
Park @ trailhead next to Von's, climb fire road approx. 1/4 mi. to climb on right. Proceed upward & southbound until reaching crest. Decend on various northbound singletracks.

Summary:
Great riding for all levels, but strenous climbs, some rocky sections, can be hot and dry..take lots of water. Tough tires and tubes help, rocky, some cactus, but no goatheads. Best in early morning; watch for big horn sheep, coyote, roadrunner, mtn quail. This is fine desert riding, great views. Also great at sunset..as the return ride is quick..all DH.

Recommended Route:
Variations to trails with easy access from Palm Springs. Park or begin at the Vons grocery on Hwy 111-Palm Canyon, near Gene Autyr Drive. Ride up the obvious dirt road, past initial gate, toward big water tanks, continue on dirt road as it bends right and climbs steeply (can you make it) up a draw. Once at the top of this hill, enjoy the view, then continue, ride slightly down and take single track veering off to right, but still climbing (don't take the tracks leading down a side hill), climb sweet single track that has several variations, rejoin 2 track, and climb to a T junction at a saddle. Left will take you single tract back down to Cathedral City. But continue to right, climb a short steep hill, and just before top, take obvious single track contouring right around hill, then a left, then quick right for a mile of fun whoop de doos, then a left in a hollow, for more whoops, and reach a well defined saddle with IMBA sign. Several variations to explore from there, all fun, but to continue, climb up steeply left, then ride great singletrack to Murray Peak, return the same way.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
All these easy to reach variations are called the Goat Trails, but most are really ancient indian trails that led from canyon spring to canyon. Local bike shops have info, and Rancho Mirage shop has organized rides.

Summary:
in the late 80's, Cindy Whitehead built and promoted this trail with a race to top all races....this loop
was part of a retro no shocks race that ended with steepest drop known to any biker. (if you look up to
your left about 50yds. from the start, you will see it cut out of the hillside) needless to say there is a detour now that makes it longer and funner...
I do private tours for the Resorts in the area and am available for trailguiding by appt. rentals available.

Recommended Route:
well its now june and 116 degrees on the trail, so the volunteer closure works out just great.....by the time its open its too hot, by the time its closed its just cooled down,go figure.......
anyway, anybody in the palm springs area during the cool season that likes a hard challenge, this is for you, its the most technically demanding in so cal...
