Mostly boring wide soft stuff. If you go as fast as you can it's kinda fun. Some "secret" trails are a bit of a thrill. Lots of hikers and horses and blind corners, though. Hippie local hikers don't appreciate us having fun on "their trails" so be respectful and yell loudly aroud corners if you think you can't stop.

Summary:
Get ready to climb... and steeply!

The forest had featured only fire roads; in the past all the single-track was unofficial and frequently ruined by sustainable logging. Recently local advocates have created a few miles of official trail, and cleared other paths from the massive trees that fell the past 2 winters, huzzah!

The weekends and evenings are busy, and the bottom has an awesome disc-golf course that always has a cool crowd. Visibility is often bad and speeds get out of hand fast on the steep terrain, WATCH for hikers, dogs, and horses.

Recommended Route:
my favorite routes spur off a logging road at the top of trail #3-
look for the tracks in the mud-

Other recommended trails in the same area:
many books recommend Prairie Creek to the north, a 20-mile loop with limited single-track, but great views on the beach.

my personal favorite trail in Humboldt is south at Humboldt Redwoods state park, in the Bull Creek area. Go up the north ridge anyway you wish (I take Pole-line to avoid mud), but come down Thornton MUT... it is the only decent legal single-track in Humboldt.

Summary:
1st & only time to ride this park was last year's 12 Hours of Humboldt. I'm a big fan of redwood forest riding, and the "Feel" of Humboldt Country, and Arcata, so it was a great experience for me. I truly prefer singletrack to fire road, but the riding is so beautiful and the cardio. exchange quite adequate enough that this is truly a fine place to ride. It would be nice to know of other similar places to ride in the Ferndale to Arcata stretch. Any recommendations?

Recommended Route:
We started @ the grassy park, through a parking lot, right up a steep. long climb. that's about all I can say. I believe we got to taste from freshly made singletrack that was specifically made for the race -- good job guys and gals!

Summary:
Just reading your "hippie local hikers" statement and felt the need to reply since I live in Arcata and attend HSU. HSU is a university whose community revolves around environmental stewardship. We are proud to offer people the chance to explore this forest as well as use it for recreational purposes such as mountain biking. So be respectful, if it wasn't for us "hippies" you may have never had a place to enjoy your riding. The forest is for preservation first and recreational uses come second.

Summary:
This is the place I learned ho too ride. Has some good uphills to get your lungs in shape, ( as long as your not sampleing the local high-lights) with some nice long downhills that you can really fly down. Trail #3 and the jump trail are some of the better down hills as long as you dont use your brakes. Ya!
Have fun....

Summary:
This is where I got into the sport of and to me, it's still the best. The forest there has left it's permanent mark on me. Most of the trails are wide and fast but you can find all the single-track your heart desires if you know where to look. Rode there 5 times a week when I was training and never got bored. Hikers are friendly and usually willing to share a toke. Don't worry about stumbling on a patch. I've spent as much time there as anybody and I have yet to accidentally stumble on one.

Recommended Route:
I've been in from every direction and I can't say one is better than the rest. Comming in from Redwood Park is the steepest but it's also the least crowded. Most of the downhill trafic takes the jump tack that runs parrellel to this trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There's some so-so single track behind the golf course in McKinleyville but ACF is really the best around.
