Blue Mountain Trail
4 reviews
 4.75 of 5

The trail starts 1/2 mile from the lodge's. It begins with a service road section called Jacobs Ladder. This section is loose and steep, if you are strong...maybe 1/2 can be ridden. This section is about a mile long. You then arrive at the singletrack. This section will take you about an hour to complete. It is fairly steep and technical in a few areas, do not pass as it is not very wide and there is always that precipice on your right, it may drop for several hundred feet. Eventually you will get to Portland Gap, where the Ranger Station is located and you can catch your breadth and get some water, use the bathroom or even rent a cabin. There are no roads up here, you just rode on it. This trail is also used by hikers. The second half of the trail will take about 2 hours to complete and is very technical. You will ride through scree, dropoffs, chutes and tons of switchbacks. Be careful, one slip and you could drop off the edge of the precipice and not hit the ground for quite awhile. When you get to the top, take a rest and prepare for the best downhill in Jamiaca and the ENTIRE caribbean islands. Everything is ridable, at least we have done so in the past. Just ride within your capabilities. The total time down should take about 45 minutes to an hour. This is one fast and unbelievable ride. Tough part is going up, maybe 1/2 is ridable, the other you must push.

Summary:
Absolutely mind blowing. Very tough going up, but well worth it. You should be in good physically condition. Didn't make it to the peak due to time constrants, but that just makes for another trip.
From were we started to come down its a technical, fast single track and to your left, at least a 100 foot drop off. I couldn't stop smiling on the way down. It turns into double tracks which is shalely and faster with wicked switch backs one after the other. Near the end it turns into a smooth, super fast dirt road. Great little BMX jumps with some air time. Bring a first aid kit for the cuts and scrapes. Can't wait to do it again. Don't forget to take time and see the scenery, its spectacular.

Recommended Route:
Start from Mavis Bank

Summary:
This is the most fun I have had on a mountain bike, so far. Going up is a bitch but the 6.5 mile downhill is a blast, I laughed all the way even though my rear hub had totally seized. It is a good thing that I did not need to pedal. The trail is very varied with plenty of interesting bits but no mental stuff. The scenery is awesome, take a look while pushing up,[I'm a fat bastard so only managed to ride 1/3rd of trail up] because you won't have time to look on the way down.
This trail is mainly used by hikers with very few bikers, so no problems so far. Please don't run over anybody because I want to ride this very often. For some bizarre, but cool, reason the walkers like to hike in the early morning which means that bikers should aim to leave the lodge area at 8 or 9am.
Ideal bike for this trail would be a light full suspension freeride and don't bring your grandma.

Recommended Route:
There is only one

Non specific but I think this trail can be extended which will mean a 10 mile+ downhill...oh mama!!!!!

Summary:
One of the great rides in Jamaica. Like Declan says, not for the faint hearted. This one is tough, but the ride down is more than worth it. Do not go alone. On a clear day you can see just about all of Jamaica, I hear you can even see Cuba from here. Do not leave later than 11:00 AM.

Recommended Route:
Hire a helicopter to the peak.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lots, but many yet to be discovered by mountain bikers.

Summary:
A tough ride up to the peak, if really fit and good technically could manage to ride half of it. The way down is worth the 3 hours uphill. Absolutely fantastic ride downhill on mainly single track with everything you could want - all types of surface, drop offs, fantastic views, technically challenging, 100 feet drops on one side of the trail....just do it.

Recommended Route:
There is only one route - from Penlyne to the peak.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lots of other trails to explore in the area - only for the tough hearted.
