Asuncion Jardin Botanico

In July 2002, a new MTB group in Paraguay held a race in the Botanico Gardens, carving a singletrack through the woods. You get two uphills, and two downhills, somewhat technical ... enough to make this rider part company with his bicycle. There's a 7,000 guaranies (USD 1.10) entrance fee to the park.

Summary:
As far as I know, this is Paraguay's first attempt at creating a trail. Asuncion's city government signed on to the attempt, so this could be a keeper. This singletrack is a welcome addition: you can drive five miles and find a dirt road (since only 10% of the roads nationwide are paved). But singletrack is a novelty, and this is a good effort. Actually, people are going to need to continue riding this trail or it will grow over. For the few MTB enthusiasts in Paraguay, this is worth the effort. More recreational users can content themselves with riding on the dirt roads throughout the complex. It's a very short course. The 4-stars are for the effort of getting MTB started.

Recommended Route:
Get into the woods and follow the singletrack and it threads up and down, connected by stretches of a sandy fire road.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ride dirt roads in communities in Altos, Emboscada, San Bernardino, Atyra (start at the lodge on the "mountain"). There is a nearly flat MTB course in the middle of Nu Guazu Park in Asuncion, with some technical passes through culverts. Others recommend riding in Aregua, too.
