Most awesome ride within 1hr of Cape Town and best kept secret in the Western Cape [now no more, hehe] This ride is hard!! Even after 2 years of riding it regularly between 4 and 5 times a week it still makes you sit up and take notice. Starts off on a steep winding jeep track which can get quite loose in summer. Short sandy section about 15 mins into the ride which is very loose in summer [some pushing may be in order for a few minutes] and then the awesome single-track starts. Before the top of the grassy section make sure to take the fork to the left to get back onto the single-track. This is the 1\2 way point. Views are spectacular and the more you climb the better this trail gets. Challenging rocky single-track which requires a lot of power to get through. First gear most of the way since you climb 45 minutes and go from 150m elevation to +600m . At the top the views are breath-taking, all across to Lions Head, Robben Island , West Coast, Cape Point, False Bay, and the mountain range behind Somerset West. Descent can be exhilarating but caution is required for the inexperienced. Takes between 11 and 18mins to descend. Total route is 9km and takes between 55min and 90mins depending on fitness level. Other route options exist. Please email me for details at gdg@iafrica.com 0836753341 or if you want a guided tour up the mountain. Regards Guido

My personal record now stands at 36:21 from the boom to the helipad...any challengers?
Trail is becoming awesome, especially since I got my Xtension\Azonic full suspension.
Had a few encounters with reptiles and recently with a lynx...makes it all the more interesting.

Summary:
All Guido said is spot-on. This is tough going...but only for about 45 minutes! It'll definitely sharpen up your technical uphill riding skills, as well as your control in sand (up- and down hill). For downhill junkies, it's worth the slog to the top for the 10 or so minutes of descent- pretty technical, so take it easy or you might land up in a ditch. Views are superb!

Recommended Route:
The only one there is. To the top and back down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
None that I'm aware of, but plenty of riding in City Bowl.
