Groenkloof

This trail is locted at the source of the Apies river where the original founders of Pretoria set up camp. The trail is marked, although not well, and takes one through jeep track in indigenous scrub across dry river beds into single track that in some cases is technical. The trail is a circular route and directions are issued. A lovely Sunday morning outing.

Summary:
Fountains has a variety of fun single track. There are many routes so explore the options and decide on your own favourite. The single track for MTB is marked with green, although not very well. There are some testing little drops so watch out for the rocks. There is also the option of cutting under the highway to climb the hill on the West side. Push yourself to climb it up this as there is a high speed downhill as your reward on the decent. Overall a mixed bag for all riders that will increase your skill level as you ride. This route is designed for MTB so push yourself nad the pleasure will flow.

Recommended Route:
Skip the Groenkloof reserve and stick to the fountains track.

Summary:
Only done this route twice (Once clockwise - the proper direction) and once anti-clockwise - against the traffic.
Clockwise: 15km over the mountain with some serious uphills - rocky and technical on some. The first serious climb is a single track over some serious rocky terrain - If you can do it without getting off and pushing - I'd reckon you're good.
This takes you to enjoyable singletrack through pine forest area on top of the mountain. Then some easy fireroad riding with a great, relatively long fireroad downhill (loose rocky terrain makes for fun).
Some more easy riding at the back of the mountain, with a hell of a long, steep and rocky fireroad uphill back to the top.
Some more easy riding - then lots of fun downhills back to the base. Anti-clockwise: only recommended once you know the trail's layout backwards :-)
Be carefull of oncomming traffic - especially on the uphills and downhills, as downhillers or motivated climbers will curse you if they have to brake unnecessarily.
Long and challanging uphills to start with (while you've still got the energy) - then easy riding - if you've got the guts to take on loose rocky downhills at high speed - this is where it's at. At the bottom (back-end) of the mountain you've got some easy riding before the fairly tough ascend to the forest.
The single-track (this time downhill!) gives for some technical, rocky (but not loose) fun downhilling to where you can gather your nerves again on some easy fireroads. A last serious uphill (not too long) is a fun challange over loose soil, before you coast home on the fireroads. If you're lucky - you may get to see some Zebras or other Africa game enroute. Have not tried the detours yet.
May be too rocky for some - forces you to slow down at times. A nice outing with your girlfriend, wife or friend, with the resort at base camp providing good picnic/braai spots.

Recommended Route:
This is a circular route (with a number of small detours available) through a nature reserve. Do it clockwise first, or you may deviate off the marked route.

Summary:
The bigger allocated route which goes over the mountain etc. is too hot (ie. no shade) and too rocky. The race course is in the forest and over the rivers etc. Very nice route, no serious uphills but some nice down hills and some technical sections too!

Recommended Route:
Rather just ride on the race course than the other course which streches over the mountain!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Klapperkop is also very nice but too rocky and bumpy but some nice downhills.
