Ceylon Forest Trail
1 reviews
 5 of 5

A difficult trail, not for the faint-hearted. A 1 mile ride on local gravel roads brings one to the base of the jeep track that winds up hill for about four miles. This is at an altitude of 6000 feet above sea level, so riding is tough through these pine forests. A number of mountain streams must be traversed. Once the peak has been reached a 3 mile down hill jepp track is encountered sending the cyclist hurtling to the base of the foothills. The trail is well marked and maintained

Ridden Trail:
Ridden Once

Summary:
Don't think - oh it's only 13km - after negotiating lovely some singeltrack through cool (knyzna-type) forest area (fun), you start climbing on fire-road through pine-forest area - probably approx 5km of steady, never-ending, slow climbing. Once you reach the top it is easy coasting down old neglected fire-roads. Some downhill singletrack (technical) negotiation through pine-forests (fun) and a fast downhill back home. Don't expect to break your average speed records. Definatley worth it - I will be going back to do the blue, yellow and green.

Recommended Route:
You actually have a selection of 4 trails - blue, red, yellow or green. (I've only done the 13km red)
I suspect the blue is the shortest through to green being the longest - just check with reception at Merry Pebbles (Castle Rock).
Follow trail markers from the castle rock entrance. (a SAFCOL permit is required - obtainable at the Merry Pebbles reception - cost R20 pp and valid for a week.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Enquire at the SAFCOL museum in SABI about various other trails: 1-5 day MTB trails are available.
