A bit of everything- 2mph granny-ring grinds to 45mph downhills. 5am sunrise on the Devil's Staircase (sublime) to relentless drizzle. Slimy root hell to berm-tastic MB heaven. If you can't do this in 12 hours (non-stop), you're doing well - go figure!

Summary:
I started the route at 5am hoping to complete the ride. If your going to ride it, dont even attempt to do the first half (going north). I spent half the ride carrying the bike, which was loaded with camping gear. I stoppped at Bein Glass farm Camp site which is at the top of loch lomond. So if your going to do it, join it past loch lomond. p.s. watch out for forestry workers and the park rangers who try and chuck you off the route cause officially a walking route, although I dont think they can legally enforce it. Feel free to email me.

Recommended Route:
Dont start from Milngavie, theirs hundreds of fences and the terrain running parallel with loch lomond is impossible to ride.

Summary:
Did the Route last week and found it really good fun mit some technical bits and some fast bits. Uphill sections are definitely uphill and need legs of steel to get up them.Down hill bits are not too bad but at the Devils stair case you need balls of steel.Did it both ways in 5 days.Camped out, more fun less money.Good for all levels. Would do it again.

Recommended Route:
Fort William to Glasgow 95 miles then turn around and head straight back to Fort William.Total 190 miles.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Only done the WHW. Sorry.

Summary:
Firstly, the first section is not mountain biking. I'd rather be in work than try to take a bike up it (again). Nearly 100% portage with HVS climbs etc-and I am technically capable! The trail is in essence good from Ardlui onwards, from the aspect of scenery and consistency. However, there are so many better trails in Scotland, like old military roads. As it is Scotlands most popular long distance footpath it gets surprisingly buzy in summer. There are quality sections though, such as the Devils Staircase.

Recommended Route:
Start at Ardlui and head North

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Glen Kinglass......excellent quite route, you can start and finish from Bridge of Orchy Hotel. Bisects WHW and has some tarmac but the quality of off road makes up for it. Any old military road.....buy Scottish Hill Tracks by Ralph Storer, which contains a chapter on the Westy also.
