Old Gits Route

Average Rating:    (0 of 5)

The name of this route isnt meant to be abusive more a compliment! The first time I rode it one cold Easter there were 4 inches of fresh snow on the higher parts of the route and I contemplated turning back at the ford. However two sets of tyre tracks snaked ahead and I decided to follow them. At the high point of the route after a desperate climb I was amazed to find two old gents, both well into their 60s, calmly eating their lunch. They were dressed in tweeds and walking boots (certainly more sensible than my lycra and SPD shoes that day!) and two mountain bikes of the type that catalogues sell for 99.99 lay alongside. If you find this route hard in summer just think of the gnarly old gits! Start at the car park in Glen Tanar, this is almost certainly the most bike friendly estate in Scotland so dont begrudge them the car park fee. Continue up the road and follow the signs (walkers and cyclists) on to the main track towards Mount Keen. Keep on this track for about 3.5 miles until you are out of the trees (which are proper Scots pines!). Two tracks go off right on the next section, one to the Black Moss (another good bike route) and the second to the farm at Etnach, keep left at both to eventually cross and then recross the river at two stone bridges. 0.4 miles after the second bridge there is a track to the left that leads to a ford. Try to ride it if you want but a ducking is almost guaranteed. Over the ford a track leads up to the pass between Black Craig and Gathering Cairn. All of this is rideable if your legs are up to the job! After the track flattens out turn left onto the track, which leads back to Glen Tanar, an excellent descent stony and fast!. At the only real junction ignore the track on the right and continue to a T junction where left takes you back to the main track and right and then over a bridge and left gives an alternative way back to the visitor centre and car park.
