Marin Trail (Blue Signpost)

Average Rating:    (4.6 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 10

Singletrack/Fire-road (Waymarked) Technical singletrack in places, short/long fire-road climbs, bridge crossings. The course has been specially designed so that it can be used by downhillers/cross-country and families. It has bombholes, fast narrow singletrack, long fire-road descents, steep sprint climbs, and air-time sections. Believe me its got everything. It was built by the forestry commission with the help of IMBA. Larger car park at Nant Cottage proposed with accommodation for up to 50 cars. On-site facilities linked to Beics Betws for bike hire/facilities and cafe/toilets & bike washing facilities - catering for families etc? Could also be located in the nearby town of Llanrwst. Organised world class weekend racing (XC/DH)? Rest areas with information maps due to be set up in certain parts of the forest so that 3 separate routes can be set up e.g. Racer, Weekend Warrior, family. Another course aimed at endurance riders/racers is being built between Llyn Elsi (Betws-y-Coed) and the Penmachno valley (This is a loop of about 24 miles) but the main details are still sketchy at this point in time. Things to look out for: Spectacular views overlooking the mountains of Snowdonia (On certain parts of the trail) Hazards: Logging work during the week, and there are a number of road crossings throughout the course (Everything is well-signposted warning of any potential hazards.

Summary:
The Marin trail is excellent as it encorporates everthing that you would want in a challenging trail.

It will take you a max of just under 4 hours and I know of someone who has done it in 1 hour 25 mins!!!

Have done this twice and now prefer the more challenging (and generally scarey!!!) Karrimor trail in Coed-Y-Brenin.

Recommended Route:
Well sign posted.

The Karrimor rules!!

Summary:
An enjoyable 2-4 hour ride (can be done in under 2 hours if youre fit and used to cycling hard!). There are some technically challenging bits but 80% could be done easily by youre average weekend warrior, the majority is forest track with some long hauls uphill.

Summary:
I would most definately recommend the Marin trail... its definately not for the faint hearted but is well worth a look by anybody of any skill level, as all the single tracks are ridable but to enjoy them the most you need to do them fast!

Recommended Route:
Do the whole of the trail if you are fit you could do it in 2 1/2 - 3 hours if not maybe a bit longer but you want to do it all for full enjoyment!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Red Bull (dolgellau)
Karrimor (dolgellau)

Summary:
This is an intense, slick and exciting route slashed out of Welsh mountains by guys who obviously love mountain biking, Why do people think that trails that happen by accident will be better than a trail purpose built to be rollercoaster fast with more twists, turns & spins than an Iraqi information minister! The bottom two peices of singletrack are worth the hour and a half travel alone.

Recommended Route:
Basically there only one unless you bail out of the firetrack asscent half way along to do the best and last two singletrack sections. This is only worth doing on the second lap though.
