Trail Directions
Starting from the top of Caerphilly mountain at the tea shack, or work your way up from Castle Coch woods to Caerphilly mountain, go East towards Machen mountain (the one with radio masts on it) in the distance and enter the woods with a fence on your right, and descend all the way to the bottom of the valley and to a road T junction. (Goldtec Components is about 100m to your left) Turn right onto road and then enter forest road on left over a gate, after about 100m, and climb up through open woodland and turn left at track T junction and follow path all way up onto Rudry mountain. Continue towards car park but turn left just before climb to car park and continue up and around back of Rudry mountain. Follow single track all the way and turn left, close to stone wall, to go down fast descent to a bog with stepping stones and then down fast path. Bear left into great little rocky track in the ferns, with lots of sharp ledges towards a narrow road. Turn left and down road past a Cattery, then right into new housing estate and cross main Caerphilly to Newport road into Bedwas village. Drink and eat everything you have and continue straight up the high street, up past a church, over a bridge, and straight on and up. The road will get to a farm and continue as a rocky track that just goes up and up. If you get to the top, continue on track across the top to meet another main track and turn right onto track with trees on your left. Start to descend on stony track and bear left when it levels out, to short single track climb and them begin epic descent onto fast track. When track goes over a cattle grid and meets a narrow road, turn up right and follow the rough track you will see going up the side of the hill. Continue up this path and bear off left and use the zig zags when the path gets too steep to ride straight up. Follow rutted track straight along the ridge of the mountains to a stony track and continue up to top of Machen mountain with radio masts on the top. Go straight over the top of mound, at the very top, down a steep grassy descent and turn right straight after rocky section when it levels out. Follow this single track all the way down, over a stile and enter a dark wood. This is the famous "Shag Pile Run". Don't waste it, this is long and fast and shaggy. Follow main path down to bottom of valley into Machen village. Turn right at food shop onto main road then left to cross over river and begin climb up other side of valley, through houses, climbing all the time and enter woods and follow paths up onto forest track. After a long climb on track, when you reach the top and it levels out, turn off main track, left into woods, and take first right onto single track, then first left and keep left for long rocky descent to come out in "Ron Davis's garden". At road turn right and climb on road all the way for a few miles to get back to Bedwas mountain where you can retrace your initial part of the route back up to the top of Caerphilly mountain.

Summary:
Did this epic route again and couldn't help noticing all the badgers while up on top of the mountain. Popped out of the woods into Ron's garden, amd I must say I felt rather bruised by the whole experience. Still knarley after all these years.

Recommended Route:
Same as described but there are so many variations you should investigate every chance to turn off main route if you have the time. Garth mountain is good as ever and the Little Garth downhill has dried out to perfection.

Caerphilly has loads to offer if you like downhilling or just like being off road. I live right by Rudry so get to ride up the hill every day. My advice is to try em all like i do and make up your own route

This review bought back the memories of Cardiff Uni
MTB club and those nasty go everywhere 40 mile all dayers on a Saturday! Not to mention the night riding. Thanks Ian. Plans are afoot to come down and revisit.
Check out Cyclopaedia bike shop in Crwys Road, Cardiff.

Recommended Route:
As described.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tons: Wenallt, Castell Coch, Coed y Croeso woods near Rudry. Garth Hill - easy road climb and great descents especially the gnarly rooty singletrack off the 'back' of it. And the best thing is that all this stuff can be linked together by short road sections.
