Foxton Grand Union Canal & Track

Average Rating:    (4.5 of 5)

Trail is a great combo of canal towpaths, unmade roads and bridleways. Fantastic countryside and a multitude of places to stop for food and beverage. Use OS Pathfinder 916 and 937.

Lots of trees bumps mud and rocks which are jiggery-pokery!

Excellent route with a mixture of trail and road. Going varies enormously with season as does scenery. Some parts tricky in wet (esp near to canal!). Wicked hill down to Saddington Reservoir and excellent pub food in "The Crown". Most pubs on route bike friendly (didn't mind muddy characters in bar!).
Some parts of disused railway absorbed back into private farmland so proceed with caution using OS map.
Great bridle path from Debdale to Foxton (avoids canal path) but farmer at Debdale Wharf Farm not bike friendly despite legal right of way.
Great way to see unspoiled Leics countryside.

Recommended Route:
Leave Kibworth south on Smeeton Road. After Springfield Farm take a left on Debdale Lane (unmade road with several farm gates) to Debdale Wharf over style onto the Grand Union Canal.
Follow towpath south to Foxton Locks (13 locks in a row). Great scenery and museum/pub/shop. Dismount for all locks.
Continue south on canal path past Bunkers Hill to small road bridge at Laughton Hills. Join road south to Theddingworth. Join Harborough Road (very busy) for 3/4 mile to unmade road on left to Bunkers Hill. Join dismantled rail track (firm base, some overgrown) and ride East to Lubenham. Exit rail path via yard to main road and turn first left to Foxton on quiet B road.
At Foxton turn left onto unmade road to bottom lock and join bridelway across to Gumley via Foxton Road.
Through Gumley bear left and head north west towards Saddington Reservoir.
Past reservoir into Saddington and exit north on Kibworth Road. Cross Saddington tunnel then turn right on Mill Lane (unmade road) to Smeeton Westerby then left back to Kibworth.
