The White Church (Lefkas)

1.off road - 12 mile climb to highest point on island 2.on road - 12 mile climb to highest point on island There are two versions of this awsome trail one on road and one off road - you can ride any combination of them as they both meet up in the village of Englouvi. it consists of 12 miles up and 12 miles down and is very tough which ever option you choose as the climbing is relentless - no breathers and limited water and food stops it is probably best done by climbing out of Nidri on the road to Vafkeri,up endless hairpin bends which produce some very scary edges to look over(and very scary descending if you choose to come down this way) - once at Vafkeri take the road to Englouvi which deteriorates into rough tracks, through the village and more hairpins to the radar towers - then across the army controlled zone and quarry up to the white church - here you will have the most spectacular views you could ever wish for ,and it makes all of the climbing worthwhile. after this you just have to descend on road to Englouvi and then decide whether to take the on or off road descent - either way you will have had one of the toughest but most rewarding days of true mountainbiking you could want If you're going to Lefkas and want a route plan - E-mail me! - Or better still contact Andy at Mountain Beach holidays for more info!

Summary:
Did this ride on a Nielson MTB holiday... very hard, especially in heat, but worth it for the views and coming back down!

Recommended Route:
Road thru Vafkeri & Englouvi.
Offroad down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Poros Coastline Loop to Vlycho, with good views over the Meganissi channel, includes a long, steep offroad downhill section.

Summary:
I visited Nidri last summer and found the most relaxed and easy going place you could wish for. The area is surrounded by large mountains and loads of olive groves.
The White church is a tiny dot on the top of on of these mountains.
You can either ride to the top on the road, a middle granny effort on smooth tarmac. Or take the off road route, much more rewarding.
The ride is well rewarding with a huge view over the med.
It was Mtb heaven, singletrack and rocky tracks every where.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There are so many rides around Nidri including the "Gold mine ride" nearly as big a climb as the church with an awesome rocky Dh after.
