Sulphur Pits, Terceira Portugal (Azores)

Volcanic trails which test your climbing ability. Ride with the island bulls. Give the slowest rider the red jersey and watch them ride faster than they ever have; as if their life depends on it, because it does. Seriously, the bulls are frightened by large crowds of mountain bikers. One screaming downhill mixed up with about 200 ups and downs. Good times in the Atlantic

Fun to ride with the bulls. Start at 1200' elevation and climb to 1800 over and over again. Good lung workout. Full suspension=quicker riding over the rocks.

Recommended Route:
From the airport, follow the highway towards Angra. Exit teh highway at the golf course exit. Go straight through the intersection (follow the signs for Algar Do Carvao (cave) and park at teh entrance to the cave. Ride up the main main road to the Furnas De Enxofre (Sulphur Pits). Just past the turn off for the Sulphur pits is a cattle gate to jump and follow the trails. No signs, I advise GPS if it is cloudy. Ride around the volcano and exit between two hills and finish where you parked the car at the main road and cave entrance.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tera Cha, Porto Martin/Praia, Agualva Magic Bus Loop, Seretta, Biscoitos, and Santa Barbara (3700' climb)
