Sintra

Average Rating:    (4.75 of 5)

It's not a real trail. I mean you can choose a lot of different ways arround the hills, through the forests and palaces of Sintra. You have fire roads, singletrack, real down hill sections, technical climbs, technical descents, etc.. It's a beautifull ride, although there are no supporting infraestractures, and the tracks are not indicated. You realy need a guide or a map...

Recommended Route:
You can start at "lagoa Azul" , go strait ahead on the tar mack about 1.5 km turn right after a little bridge (on a jeep driving range) , strat climing (4km easy) you will arrive again on the tar, from there you are at the center of the hills-from there you have about 12 diferent traks to enjoy

Summary:
I lived in Lisbon for about a year and I used to go to the Sintra area every weekend when I was there. It took weeks to find a load of good tracks as you were having to always turn back. There are no maps that are any good, so you just have to wing it. In the winter I used to start from the beach at Guincho and ride up to the top - a big climb!! But in the summer the best places to start are where Pepe says.

Recommended Route:
Any of the dh's that go straight down from the top to the bottom! Particularly if you go on from the car park Pepe mentions, about 2-3km more you come to another car park, with a track to the right that goes up to road on the ridge (eventually). About 1.5km up that track is where a great dh comes out (ie the bottom). It's on the left and you get to it from a small car park just past where the ridge road splits to Malveira. Very nice!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Although every one else has given it five stars, and that's probably right for Portugal, when compared to where I ride locally at home it is only really 3 stars.

Summary:
The soil is hard pack based on a thin layer of granite sand. allways nice in the winter because of the almost nonexistence of mud and coverd enough by the tall vegetation in the summer.
Lots of fountains and easy access to help if needed.

Recommended Route:
If you start in Barragem do rio da Mula you can find rolling and technical uphills that lead you to the heart of Sintra and a intersection of about 6 major and amazing trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
If you get lost just go down and you will find a village for sure!
