Monsanto Park

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

Great mtb playground, many miles of all kinds of trails for all kinds of skill levels, medium to high density forest with lots of birds and other animals (some dangerous), its the lung of the city, all this in the middle of Lisbon. The negative part of the question is: If you dont know it you shouldnt go alone, always ride in group and preferentially early in the morning because some animals dont came out of the burrow after lunch time.

Summary:
This place is very very nice. You have to invest time into it cause there's just tooooo much to ride. The maps they give you are basic, 50% of the trails arent shown though (and those are the fun, singletrack trails). Park is beautiful, some parts are thick pine forests, some eucalyptus forest, some grassy fields, etc. Lots of old stone quarries (some have 100 ft cliffs), with trails around the edges and into the middle. The regular route (green trail) is easy, double track with some nice up/down hills. The park is very very hilly, so you are either climbing or downhilling. There is a great 2 mile long double track downhill (or uphill if you want!!) that i've reached 45-50 kph on. The park is VERY safe now, the new mayor has cleaned up the prostitutes and drug addicts. Email me if anyine wants a guided tour, i have ridden over 500 km in this park in the past 6 months and still love it!! It takes me 10 minutes to get there by bike from my house. Not too crowded, even on weekends. Weekend mornings have the most people, but after 1:00 pm (everyine goes to lunch) the trails are very virtually empty.

Recommended Route:
Start anywhere and explore explore explore...theres too much not shown on the maps. Serafina is a good central place to start, but any entrace will get yo into good trails

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sintra/Arrabida

Summary:
Writing down that Monsanto is "known for tourists to be mugged whilst being entertained" is probably one of the most stupid things that i've ever read...
It’s a great place for riding, with a great diversity of tracks and different levels of difficulty (with one of the best single tracks in the Lisbon area)

Summary:
Go the Serafina Car Park, where is a good place to park and start your ride.
There is always a lot of people starting, in the weekend, with who you can join if it is your first time. There are lots of possibilities, just explore the place.

Recommended Route:
Deffinitly, near (just inside) Lisbon and a really great diversity of tracks, dirty roads, fire roads and single tracks.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
You have Sintra park and Arrabida Park, with in 30 km range, also described here.

Summary:
Its a good trail if you don't have much time to spend. Great for after work rides during spring and summer.
Don't worry about the "girls". In the past it was a dangerous place, right know its more a mith than reality.
Preferably ride first with someone who knows the area.

Recommended Route:
Start from Benfica (across the pedestrial bridge over the rail) go left or right.

Summary:
The trail listed gives you a brief idea that that you have to be careful and ride in groups.... I used to work in Lisbon for a period of time (3 years on and off)and the park is up near the Benfica stadium. A couple of us got lost going to the stadium (about 3 in the afternoon), and found a lady standing by the side of the road in revealing clothes. 20yds down there was another, another 20 yards another lass this carried on for about a mile - i've never seen anything like it, even in amsterdam. I'm sure some of the place is nice but I was told by my GF (a local at the time), that the place is known for "tourists" to be mugged whilst being entertained - and at other times. I would stay away.

Recommended Route:
None.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Drive out to Loures - take the road opposite the "Pingo Doce" (a supermarket/mini mall type of thing) and follow for about 15km. There is a park/wildnerness type thing with mainly fire roads for beginner to intermeadiate.
