Weisser Stein
4 reviews
 4.25 of 5

Pretty much a combination of singletrack and forest access roads. All spiral around the hill, eventually leading up to Weisser Stein. Condition-wise it is usually fairly dry from end of April through to September. The rest of the year you have a lot of slippery leaves, often hiding stones and roots (all even more slippery in combination with one another). Some of the singletrack can get real steep if you are riding up it, but it is a nice chance to practice your technical skills. Closer to Heidelberg you have a lot of tourists and walkers. The further up you get, the less people you will encounter. For really long rides, you can take off from the Weisser Stein into the Odenwald and here your opportunity for tours are infinite.

Trail Directions
This is not a description of one trail but the network of trails above Heidelberg on the other side of the river all leading up to the "Weisser Stein." The easiest way to access these trails is to ride up the Philosophenweg and after a short asphalt ascent, get on the dirt up to the Stein. You can also hit the trails from the other side of the hill in Dossenheim or Handschuhsheim, or alternately from Ziegelhausen. Trailheads are easy to find in all locations. You can't get lost on these trails as all intersections have large stones marked with directions. In between you have singletrack connection the larger thoroughfares with one another. You can do a short evening ride here of a couple of kilometeres or you can spend the whole day riding around multiple trails.

Summary:
The Freeride trail up there rocks. Goto the top and have some food and then bomb DH/FR trail and have a blast. The people that run the restraunt up there ROCK. They are very nice to riders. So be respectful to them. Watch out for the jumps on the second half of the trail.

Recommended Route:
DH/FR trail

Summary:
Great trail. Rode it for the first time and was thoroughly satisfied. Great aerobic workout getting to the top, and a fun, tricky (not really technical) downhill with a few great switchbacks. Saw tons of other trails we could have ridden also but ran out of daylight. Must ride if in Germany (JD Jr. is slow). Also, great view of castle from top, if you are a pic taker bring a camera.

Recommended Route:
We parked in downtown Heidelberg by the Woolworth's. Rode across the river, took a left and then the very first road on the right. At the highest point on the road (maybe about 2 miles?) take a right. Ride up that road a couple of hundred yards and look for the single track going up.

Don't know any others

Summary:
Certainly a nice area to ride and pretty "aerobic" but lacks the technical difficulty. Not much single trail, rocks or anything.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Follow the withe trail marks. Ride up Philophenweg, down to Neckarsteinach, up again and towards Nackargemuend, ride down and cross the river and ride back up on the other side to the top of the mountain and then down a nice single track back to Heidelberg. Overall not technical but a nice 2.5 hours ride.

Summary:
This by far is the best trail I been on in the Heidelberg area. We normaly start in Heidelberg and head up, since that is the only way to get there.
We have a group that does this every Sunday in the Winter, normal ride is about 60 mins to the top. Once we get there we have a nice Gulash Soup with a beer or two then we head down and boy do we.

The downhill is awsome and challenging at some points. It varies from small rocks, big rocks, roots, and even the wet leaves.

If planning on doing this, bring lots of water and maybe a snack or two. Very steep on way up.
