Elk Trail

The trail consists of several parts, the trip to Fish Lake took 45 mins , 12 kms . A tough hill to warm you up at teh trail head but from there the down hills seem to be the way . The next section of about 20 k is a bit more technical and a lot harder . The terain ranges from double track to alot of single track that has longer grass and soft base. Sand is not a problem here . the hills are not too bad but you can expect to do some long ones. Be prepared to either get wet or goaround the beaver ponds that flood the road just before the Hunters Lake turnoff. (we thought it was an old sign)water up to our knees cause the road was flooded . Was a bit chilly as Ice was forming on the pond in places. Either go through or go back a long way, about 3-4 hours back. Watch out for the deep sections and you will be ok. The connector to Hunters Lake was a wild ride . THe hills are absolutly fabulous, incredible speed down, rocks and roots to watch for , and hard climbs up , some alot longer than others . The end , close to the road does have that pine forest sand to the trail , but you can negotiate around it adding to the fun. AProx 45 km, in the bush , 25 k back via the gravel road that has more hills than the first 20 k of trails . sit back and enjoy the ride , we spemt 6 1/2 hours in the saddle . Enjoyed every min with pictures to prove .

Summary:
I drove on the gravel road (#240) west of the south gate park entrance to the beginning of the Fish Lake trail. I rode to the Fish Lake campground and it was fairly easy. The first half is a gravel road but it is a nice easy 12km ride. I then rode west toward Hunter's Lake. This section was about 13 km long and very tough going. The trail was not used very much and consequently was overgrown and slow going. Some of the hills are long. I rode it in the fall so it was dry but there were rough spots where it was low. The trail from Hunter's Lake back to the grid road was the best part and has some good hills on it. This trail is in good shape and much better than the Elk Trail section. The 5 km on the road back to the other trailhead was a refreshing break. The total was 42 km and took me 2:40 of hard riding.
