Trail 1 (To the Firetower)
8 reviews
 2.5 of 5

Trail one, biking up to the Firetower, is a predominantly ascending journey filled with twisty turns. An ascent may cover 500m, with several demanding corners on the way up. If you follow Trail #15 to Trail #1, you'll negotiate several ascending hairpins (joy, joy!!). On then on the way back, you can travel much more quicker. To Firetower is challenging because it is demanding. On the way there from the Champlain Parking lot, you pass Mckinstry Lodge, where you may warm up or rest,(and decide to turn around.)

Summary:
DirtDog has it right. Start on #1 out of Old Chelsea and ride out to the Fire Tower and back. You start out with a 500 foot climb with some tricky rock and sand pitches. It's then up and down for the next 10 miles (50-200 foot elevation changes).

If that is too boring for you, take a detour down to Meech Lake (#24 to #40) a 500 foot over 2.5 mile descent.

If you are still not tired, try riding down the footpath from the Fire Tower to Luskville (and back).

Recommended Route:
#1 Old Chelsea to Fire Tower.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
O'Brien to Wakefield (#36 - #50 - #52)

Summary:
I rode from hickory trail (bottom of the park) to the firetower and back, about 62km return. I ride the #1 regularly (to get to the "good stuff"), and one day decided to do the fire tower. Two things happened that day: 1) it was my first time to the fire tower, and 2) it was my LAST time to the fire tower. In a word - BORRRING. Sure, there's a couple of hills, but nothing coming close to a lungbuster. Its predominantly gravel fireroad stuff. I would NOT call this trail 'advanced' - its pure beginner material. Great for first time riders I guess.

Recommended Route:
Anything else. (Especially any trail that has "no biking" signs on it).

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Anything with a 'no biking' sign.

Summary:
Well....good points are that it is a great workout, you get a great view at the end and hey, any excuse to go biking. The bad points are - to prevent the massive amount of erosion on the trail the NCC poured a pile of loose gravel all over it in certain sections - the results? No grip going uphill and that "sliding" feeling going down - yikes! So i don't really recommend this trail - you do all the frustrating loose rock work on the way up and then you can't bomb down because you will slip into the bush!

Recommended Route:
Like everyone else has been saying

Summary:
This sorry excuse of a "trail" amounts to nothing more than sinfully simple double track. This would be a great trail if I still had my training wheels on, however it has been sometime since I have needed them...as such I would rather spend the afternoon plucking my toenails out with rusty pliers than ride this abismal "trail" again. My advise, save the gas money you would have spent going to this trail and use it on a one way ticket to BC to ride. If you spoiled easterner don't like my west coast attitude, then wipe your sorry little tears, hop back on your bike and go straight to the nearest hard core bike path. Peace out!!!

Recommended Route:
Instead of leaving from the Champlain Lookout, turn around and go to the nearest depanneur and pick up a six pack, your time will be better spent drinking than riding this "trail".

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The trail to my bathroom 'cause I am going to puke if I have to ride this trail one more time!!!!

Summary:
With all due respect to the review above, this trail is really boring. No rocks, no challenge, no fun. All you have to do is go up a couple of easy hills. Spare yourself the trail and try Asticou at the southern end of the park. At least you can ride up hill for 40 minutes and look forward to a fun and fast downhill when you go back.

Recommended Route:
Leave from Champlain lookout and ride up the trail to trail #1. Follow it all the way to the Firetower.
