Coaticook Mountain Bike Trail
25 reviews

The trail is a loop around the park. This trail was design for mountain bikes and it shows in the quality of the trail. Lots of technical sections to get by, and thats not including the climbs, the mud holes, the creek crossings, and the killer downhills near the end. This is the best XC trail in Quebec period.

Summary:
It has been 4 years since this trail has been reviewed here.

The site:

Very beautiful, the track is well maintained, at the entrance just above the parking lot, there is a small office where you can buy tickets and there are vending machines. This is not a place to buy your snacks or pick up a lunch so make sure you've packed something already.

We had the mountain pretty much to ourselves. We only saw about 8 others on the trail, we were passed once quickly but a man on a modest hardtail, must have been a regular. It was very picturesque and coming from Montreal, the fresh air was great.

The trail:

BE PREPARED TO CLIMB. This trail always keeps you guessing, it has steep climbs, uphill switchbacks over roots and it also has some great downs. The trail is built to keep you guessing and was a nice feeling switching from downhill to uphill mode constantly, you really start to savor the short downhill moments.

At the beginning of trail #20 take a break, and enjoy the view. You should eat something, sandwich, energy bar and rest as if you're half way there. Trail 20 - 28 are the most difficult and will require constant uphill pedaling with no end in sight, so save your energy find your groove and move at a constant pace. It can also be difficult to clip in on this section.

Tips:

- Bring tire levers, a patch kit (or spare tube) and a pump
- Bring a tire boot or spare tire
- Bring a spare link for your chain or bring a new chain with you
- Multitool
- First aid kit
- Bring a lot of water. I only brought 2 liters and ran out towards the end, on a hotter day it can be a real problem. You will cross a couple of streams on the first 15 trails but drink at your own risk.
Look up: Beaver Fever

You really don't want to be stuck on any of this mountain with a flat tire, sidewall tear or a broken chain. These trails are not walkable and forget about just riding it down as there is no trail that only goes down.

You must be physically fit and prepared for a challenge, I will definitely be back here and suggest every cross country rider visit.

Summary:
Word of caution: There is no way this place is for intermediates. Sure there will be some easier parts, but maybe 15% applies to Inter., the rest is Expert. The trails do not flow well and there are too many large obstacles and tons of rocks for an intermediate rider to develop any sense of confidence. If I compare it to Kingdom Trails, I do a lot of the expert trails there and fair pretty well.
Knee pads and a second set of lungs are a must.

Recommended Route:
There is actually a bail out area, it

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Kingdom Trails!

Summary:
Just thought that I would make sure that an update was posted for this trail so that everyone knows the info is current. We rode the trail at the beginning of August, 2005.

The comments below are right on the mark. Steady, relatively technical single-track that goes and goes and goes. As intermediates, we took over 2.5 hours to complete the full loop (taking no shortcuts, but a few breaks).

Overall a great cross country ride, and our best riding of a weekend spent in the Quebec eastern townships and Vermont. Much better than the current state of affairs for X-country riders at Bromont.

Summary:
Thanks to this MTBR trail section I had a chance to do this ride!

It is just as fab as all the other reviews indicate. I just wanted to let folks know that as of 10/04 the route is in awesome shape (I didn't see any of the logging mentioned by some other reviewers)

The trail is one long, twisty, 12 mile loop. 95 percent 18 inch wide singletrack!! It is well signed so navigation is easy.

The trail rarely stays straight or flat. You are always arcing a turn or scrambling over a root. The trail would probably be a 7 out of 10 for technical ness (maybe 6) and about the same for effort. An avid expert rider would be hard pressed to not dab or walk somewhere in the ride... all the problems are getable... but there are 100's of them... a great challenge. I ride often in Colorado and this took me 2 hours at a steady clip.

Definetly compares to the Kingdom Trails of East Burke Vermont favorably to give you an idea. Plus because it is really just one long loop you don't have to deal with constant intersections and map reading... although once you are on the trail you are pretty well locked in till the end.. there are no obvious bail out points and since you are in the woods you can't see where you might exit. Also the ranger station had no maps when I was there. There is a $7 Canadian charge - you get robbed on the exchange so bring Loonies if you have them. Don't give them $20 US like I did and get 14 Canadian in change... losing proposition.

The area is not as scenic as riding in Vermont and had a pretty funky farm smell when I was there. The riding more than makes up for it! I described the ride to a guy from Crested Butte who then did it and also gave a big thumbs up. Go ride this before the secret gets out!!

Summary:
Beautiful 17.5km circuit with arguably the best XC riding in this part of Quebec. I've been here a couple of times now and will go back a lot more. It might not compare technically to the best that Bromont can serve up BUT it also doesn't have the crowds and that amusement park feel to it either - highly recommended !

Recommended Route:
Going to quick to stop and notice the trail signs but don't cheat by taking the short cuts !

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mont Glen.
