Durham East (Pickering, Ajax) - part of the waterfront trail system

Average Rating:    (4.6 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 10

The waterfront trail system starts from Niagra Falls, ON, Canada and extends 740Kms North East. When it's completed it'll be 1,000Kms long and is planned to end at the Ontario/Quebec border. The "Durham East" part of the waterfront trail system is located in Pickering & Ajax, ON, Canada. In Pickering, travel to Brock Road, then head South all the way down to the last intersection (Brock Road/Mongonery Park Road). Follow Montgomery Park Road East and then South, just short of the dead end/look out point/parking lot for the trail. The entrance to the path will be on your left hand side (see red marked on map). It is comprised of a group of connected paved park routes that's 30Kms long (one way). Along the route are - one elevated, one vaulted and two flat/ground level bridges. Right after the elevated bridge is a very short fine gravel/sandy section (50m) due to blowing sand a few meters in from the lake and covers the path to a depth of 5cms. The trail has the odd short distance steep hill to climb with two longer hills of a lower incline. No trail markers show what your travelling on nor the next connections location. From 2003-2006 a lot of permanent park benches, chained garbage cans (oil drums), a few dozen young trees and two large waterfront trails signs were installed (mainly in Ajax). These items can be a hazard to cyclist while travelling West, especially at night as they are located immediately off the path.

Summary:
REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!!! (yet again)

Sadly I was NOT able to ride this path today due to the cold.
This trail was excellent for the few rides I went out on in 2011 with no broken glass spotted!
Again the dips, ruts, cracks, bumps are getting bigger each year.
The weeds filling them do help to cushion the ride in case you do go over them.
The newest painted line is white and wide, fading in some high traffic areas & where puddles of water persist.
Wild animals were kept to rather a minimum, the odd garter snake & frogs to nearly run over, IEE!
Idiot pedestrians still persist to litter the path.
Mainly due to walking into on-coming traffic even with a clearly marked painted white line.
The odd fool who still thinks their dog can be anywhere on the path as long as it's on a leash still persist!

Recommended Route:
Now we move onto our 2011 Cash Contest...regarding how long it will take before the idiot next door & his mom each get int oa car accident...
Sofar, after 1 year each of them has managed to escape a crash!
The WINNER of the $500 Prize($20/person)is no other then - The Rock. Please, mail me your winning ticket & I will mail you your cheque!

Summary:
REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!!! (yet again)

Sadly I was NOT able to ride this path today due to the cold & rain.
This trail was excellent for 2010 with no broken glass spotted!
Again the dips, ruts, cracks, bumps are getting bigger each year.
The weeds filling them do help to cusion the ride incase you do go over them.
The painted blue line got a top coat of yellow that's also wider & is holding up well.
Wild animals were kept to rather a minimun, but with plenty of red foxes, frogs & nearly run over, IEE!
I only had one flat rear tire for 2010, which I noticed while walking past my bike in the garage.
Some of the usual characters from previous were still not spotted like a guy who prefers to wear DH clothing.
The silver haired gent was spotted & passed once as he now prefers to go out biking around 12 noon.
Idiot pedestrians still persist to litter the path.
Mainly due to walking into on-coming traffic even with a clearly marked painted wider yellow line.
The odd fool who still thinks their dog can be anywhere on the path as long as it's on a leash still persist.
This year I had to phone the police after a woman walking her dog bit my right foot after it ran around it's own and then forced me to stop rather then collide with it,
I'm sorry now that I didn't plow into that damned mutt!

Recommended Route:
I also got into one accident this year, back on July 17 at approx. 1pm/EST in Ajax, ON.An idiot parked his Forest Green Mini Van facing south, got out of his vehicle - slammed his door shut and was eyeing me hard. Most likely to steal my bike as it's expensive and he had plenty of storage space in his mini van.The idiot in question without looking to see if South bound traffic are coming crossed the road while watching me approach.By one house south of him I veared to my left - half way between him and his vehicle. He then attacked me by stopping, pivoting to his right and slamming his right shoulder into me.This totaly shocked me, threw me hard to my left and into the side of his vehicle.I then bounced off of it and tried to re-gain my balance but it was too late.I went down hard on my right fore-arm, elbow, shin, knee, thigh.I was limping for 2-weeks solid with multi cuts, tons of bruising and 2 hematomas. My helmet was cracked in 3 places, my second time worn new shorts were scrubbed on the right thigh. After paying $5 and waiting 1 month the local police were totaly useless. The worthless/idiot cop believed every word from my attacker!

Well friends, I can tell you FINALY has earned it just short of 3 calendar years!

Summary:
REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!!! (again)

Sadly I was NOT able to ride this path today due to rain.
This trail was excellent for 2009 with no broken glass spotted!
Again the dips, ruts, cracks, bumps are getting bigger each year.
The weeds filling them do help to cusion the ride incase you do go over them.
The painted blue line (seperating traffic in Ajax) has held up well.
A few more park benches were added along with a gazebo to reduce the cleaning & path extension budgets, oh well!
The security patrol was never spotted during the long summer months where the next crop of criminals are cutting their teeth.
Police were spotted only once during the early part of the Spring.
Wild animals were kept to rather a minimun, but with plenty of snakes spotted & nearly run over, IEE!
One dead golden eagle was spotted along with a turtle in a park attempting to cross the road.
The drug dealers from near the end of the path in Ajax have not been spotted for 2yrs now, hurray!
I did manage to get 2 flat tires in one day, believe it or not but both within 12hrs to be specific.
The first was due to my rear side tires rubber cracking & the innertube burst through.
The read headed girl at the Child Day Care was very friendly in allowing me to make an emergency phone call home - Thanks, your a life saver!
The nafter buying a new tire & innertube, I joined my friends for a nite bike ride.
The second flat tire was caused a mere 100m before the day-time flat location and this time was caused by the innertube pushing away the rim strip and puncturing in the spoke hole.
Big thanks go out to: my fiancée, CasH & Timon escorting me safely out from the non street lighted road for 4Kms to an Esso Gas Station.
Some of the usual characters from previous were not spotted like a guy who prefers to wear DH clothing, the silver haired gent and the guy with no helmet but wearing and mp3 player.
One group of 3 race cyclists one day were fun to pace off of.
Idiot pedestrians still persist to litter the path.
Mainly due to walking into on-coming traffic even with a clearly marked painted blue line.
This year many new people opted to shout-hey, slow down! or slow down!
The odd fool who still thinks there dog can be anywhere on the path as long as it's on a leash.

Recommended Route:
I had a bike frame fail/brake on me on Sept.06.
Luckily I was able to ride it home upto 20Kms/hr for 14Kms.
The weld right above the re-inforced area where the seatpost meets the bottom bracket let go!
With my dads help over 2 days & 15hrs each we took the parts off this broken bike and put it onto an older bike.
I hope I can meet the guy I showed my broken frame to (on a silver full susp. bike with left mirror) my new bike one day in 2010!
A few times I managed to spot then catch upto & ride with the cute, busty, young white lady from last years posting on a black 2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk full susp. mtb.
WOW! She is cute as heck, firm yet jiggly & a tight little bum, sweet!
Apparently she got herself a new ride, a 2009 Trek Fuel EX7 full susp.
So look for her on a TiTanium coloured bike if you don't like riding alone at approx. 12-2pm.

Now we move onto our 2009 Cash Contest...regarding how long it will take the idiot next door & his mom take to earn a drivers license?
Well friends, I can tell you NEITHER has earned one after 2 calendar years!
The WINNER of the $500 Prize($20/person)is no other then - Timon. Please, mail me your winning ticket & I will mail your cheque!

REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!!!

After not having ridden this path for 6 weeks (during daylight hours) & 8 weeks (during night-time hours).
I went out on...THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!!!

Apparently the cool/cold temperatures did nothing for the mindless pedestrians on the path. Why do people with dogs always opt to look behind themselves when I approach?

I'm getting a little sick & tired of the dog leashes that block off the entire width of the path!

The newest A-hole to watchout for apparently only appears during the hours of 12pm-2pm as he likes to have his shirt off and carry it in his left hand with his right hand empty. Yes, I hear you asking yourself does this mindless Russian looking fellow walk a dog? Well you are correct! This canine is very easy to distinguish as it's a British Bulldog WITHOUT a leash. His owner is un-mistakeable as his neck is physicaly thicker then his head - the thick muscle head!

Recommended Route:
Now we move onto our Cash Contest...regarding how long the idiot next door can drive until he next damages his car.

Well friends, I can tell you he is true to form & damaged his car on July 30,08.

The WINNER of the $260 Prize($20 entry/person)is no other then - CasH. Please, mail me your winning ticket and I will mail to you your cheque!

The newest development is that his wife now drives his vehicle. You should of seen this...It took her 6 tries of going forward-backward-forward-backward before she was able to park the car on her driveway parallel to the cement curbing.
