The trails at and around Searchmont provide about as close to true mountain biking as there is in the midwest U.S or northern Ontario. The base at Searchmont is a winter ski resort, adjacent to a tiny burg, which has opened their XC trails for summer biking. Day passes run $8 Canadian (about $4 US), but if you stay at a Searchmont chalet its free.
You can choose any of four major systems to travel, for a total of some 60 miles, and they range from extremely tight singletrack to fireroads to ungroomed back country trails. The Achigan (20 mile loop) and Goulais River (14 mile loop) systems are best Achigan for high and heavy mountain terrain, and the Goulais for beautiful scenery which includes a 40 waterfall.
Searchmont is located about 20 miles (45 km) north of Sault Ste Marie MI/ON. Take I-75 north across the border, then Hwy 17 north from the Sault to Hwy 556, which takes you right into the burg. The resort is on your right just before town.
Summary: Searchmont has a few trails that are open, that are lefovers from the ambc/ontario cup races that were held there in 1998-1999 I believe. The dh trails are burly but neither them or the xc get any maintenance. There is a lot of good riding at Hiawatha right on the edge of town in the sault. If anyone is interested the Algoma trail crew started building trails in summer 2004 and it continues in 2005. We have built a large trail system of technical flowing singletrack in Heyden. (just outside the sault, on the way to searchmont) Look up to the left when you are going under the train bridge, the trail starts at the top of the mountain at the radio tower. Other recommended trails in the same area: Bellvue valley, Hiawatha highlands, voyageur trail sections around the Sault. Lots of good road riding in the sault area too.

Summary: Aug 2004.
Entered the trail head at the top of the Beginners Ski T-Bar area, also is the top of the Downhill Mt Bike track. This was a 4 mile loop, half was up hill over rocks and bumps, the other half was down hill, rocks and bumps, and one very steep drop off. They also had some fun wood tracks near the main lodge. I can not find any summer Info about the area, anyone know if they are working on trails or going to have anything open this year 2005?

Summary: I rode most of the DH, freeride trails up there at the resort. Very fun and technical. Mainly rocky rooty, rock drops and off camber stuff. You're usually always on your brakes. If they continue trail building there, it would be a Midwest DH mecca. I heard the AMBC is holding DH and 4-X races for ther 04 season there. highgearracing held races there during the 03 season. It was a Blast!

Summary: A great trail system. They set up some nice challenging trails for the North American Eco Challenge. I met the guy who cut the trails and he was telling me that they were planning a huge expansion of cross country ski trails.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Stokley Creek - cross country ski trails that go into the wilderness for KM's some demanding uphills and mucky riding (I didnt go in that far)

Summary: These trails are very challenging for many reasons rocky, deep woods, and very light use. There were perhaps 2 or 3 other riders out on the trails while I was there. A portion of the system was closed for get this fern intrusion into the trails that made them slippery. This place is certainly superior to most, if not all Michigan trails, and that includes Poto, the northern Lower Peninsula, and the UP. If you want to take a weeks vacation to get away and bike your butt off, then youve found the right place.
Recommended Route: Achigan and Goulais systems
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hiawatha Highlands in the Sault. I also heard that Stokeley Creek may open their trails for summer use.
