Fanshaw Lake

Great single track as well as technical sections. Most of it winds through forest and bush. The south side has lots of rocks and roots where it goes along the bluffs. Very enjoyable trail with a great view of the lake.
I normally park at the large sport complex at the end of Fanshaw Rd E. From there go along Fanshaw Rd and hang a left onto Clarke Rd. Ride until you come to a small bridge a km or two, on the left side there is a trail. Take this trail all the way into the camping park staying on the left side, you end up passing a golf coarse and then the main trail on the one side of the lake. When you reach the end of this side, turn right on the hwy and take a right on the first road, you can then enter the trails on the other side of the lake.
Summary: This year come out and try the new areas that are a lot more fun and a bit of a challenge. I was doing 54-55min laps last year and with the new areas its about 75-80 mins. Great new black diamond areas that are really not too had just technical.
Recommended Route: There are about 10 other instructions below and a map naow.
Only thing, please pay for your day, its how the trail is maintained

Summary: When i ride with my wife, this is the place we most like to go without arguing over how difficult it is. (i mean she gets P.O'd when i take her to really hard places.)
The scenery is really beautiful, most of the trail is smooth with a nice mix of rocks and roots. There are 3 creek crossings but someone had made stepping stones on them so it's not a problem. Just enough hills to give you a good workout but not too many. You can really pick up some good speed on some sections with cool roller coaster type terrain. There is a beach around the lake when you finish and there are lots of picnic tables in the park and also around the trails. We like to have a barbeque when we finish.
When you ride on even dates it's one way and on odd dates another way around. This is really cool because you see the trail from 2 different views. The lake and the streams around the lake are really clean too. There are a lot of people out fishing and canoing which adds to the atmosphere. I really don't have anything bad to say about this place and wish we lived a little closer to it (we're about 1-1/2 hours away) so I could ride it after work sometimes. We take about 3 hours around which is very slow but we stop about 3 times to eat and just relax and enjoy the scenery.
Recommended Route: Just do the whole trail. You start around the dam and follow the signs which are marked very well.

Summary: A very fun loop. The map was very helpful, and had some nice nature info as well. Some technical challenges to try, as well as a fun water crossing. i especially enjoyed the black diamond sections. You can do this trail at a high pace for a great physical workout. Not many tough climbs.
Recommended Route: I went counter clockwise.

Summary: As a Londoner and after having sampled several trails in SW ON Fanshawe still stands out amongst the best ... easily. Great variety, it's a circut/loop, long at 25kms and with great variety for moderate to experienced XC. My only complaint is the bridge on Thorndale Rd. is dangerous to cyclists as vehicles (like, big, fully loaded dump trucks) rumble by at hwy speeds scaring the power bar right out of you. Well marked and map available online http://www.thamesriver.on.ca/ or at the gate. Camping and such too.
Recommended Route: Entre through the main gate and pay the moderate fee ... so they can build a suspension bridge under the exsisting bridge at Thorndale.

Summary: I'm new to London, and have ridden the Fanshawe trail twice. Loved it both times! It's about 25km, takes between 60-90 minutes depending on how hard you push yourself. Great variety, mostly singletrack, but there's ups and downs, rocky sections, roots, fast and flat, forests, little bit of everything. Some technical sections keep it interesting. The variety of this trail is what I find so appealing. Nice scenic ride as well, with the lake (plus the neighbouring golf-course, and occasional airplane coming in to land at the airport). Current fees are $5 per adult, although in late fall and early spring the gate-booth isn't manned, so it is free.
Recommended Route: Routes are fixed: clockwise on even numbered dates, counter-clockwise on odd-numbered dates. For a map and more details, check this site:
