Cataraqui Trail

 3.5 of 5

Multi-use trail built on an old railbed. The northern 80km is actually part of the Trans-Canada trail. Smooth, flat doubletrack for the entire distance, except for 3 sections of fairly rough loose gravel, one near Smiths Falls (approx 1 km long), and the other two totalling around 1.5km between Perth Road Village and Chaffey's Lock. Some great scenery and very few signs of human habitation, other than the trail itself. Good for a cardio workout on your mountain bike, away from speeding cars.

Many entrances and exits. Go North from Hwy 401 to any of the major towns or roads that cross it. Main towns from West to East are Strathcona (north of Napanee), Harrowsmith, Sydenham, Perth Road Village, Chaffey's Lock, Elgin, Portland, and Smiths Falls. Well marked with white trail signs wherever it crosses a road, and there are generally areas to park your car at each road crossing.

Summary:
My wife and I have ridden three sections. Zero kilometre has been lost to development, but the remaining trail launches off the driveway into the LCBO (liquor store) at the south end of Smith's Falls. Pity they couldn't even ramp down from the curb to the trail. We rode as far as Otter Lake and found the trail to be a good double track. Being a rail trail means it's flat and dry.

We've also ridden from east of Harrowsmith to Yarker, and the southwesterly end of the trail from Newburgh to Strathcona. The trail is rough enough that you wouldn't want to take a road bike on it, but generally a good ride and clear of traffic.

Summary:
Smooth, flat ride with some nice scenery. Good for beginners, or better riders who want to go for a good long spin. Make sure you take some basic tools with you, because you can be a long way from the middle of nowhere if you get a flat, and there's no cell phone coverage.

Recommended Route:
North from Kingston to Sydenham, or Perth Road Village. The most scenic part I've ridden so far is between Sydenham and Chaffey's Lock. Park at the grocery store in Sydenham, or go 0.5km north of Perth Road Village on Hwy 10.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Collins Bay, Fort Henry
