There are two distinctive parts to this trail. There is the fire road part, and then there is the HARD CORE singletrack.

Summary:
Is that sign, "Eric Whelby" the same one by the entrance to that big gravel pit?

Another thing, are ATVs/Street-Trail bikes allowed on these trails? If so, where would the best way to get in be?

Summary:
This is the starting point of a whole series of trail networks. The last review already mentioned the burnside loop, but if you keep going down the power lines for a while and cross the exit, go under the overpass and cross the highway (107, or 118 I think) and rejoin the trail under the power lines again, you can find a whole other network of trails.
Just ride up the pipeline for a while and you'll se a who'll bunch of trails forking off. You can eventually make your way back into the spider lake look from here.
The terrain you'll find back there is mostly double track, there is some pretty technical single track (no tricks though).
Just be careful crossing the highways, keep a watch for ATVers while on the double track. It's also pretty easy to get lost back there, lot's of trails and intersections.

Recommended Route:
Cross the highway, enter the gate where it says Eric Whelby (or something like that)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Spider Lake, Burnside, Wrandees, Whooper Drooper, Fairview.
