Barney's River Ride

FAST FAST FAST and FAST!
Seriously, a good quick ride with lots of varied terrain. Some climbs to suck the life out of the full suspension people. Some serious down hills to watch them blow by you and enough technical spots to make you wish you practiced those skills more. But basically FAST ! I'd say it was DOUBLE TRACK and Fire Road type of trail. It's not as long as it sounds. Two or three hours, depending upon the riders.
Going towards Antigonish on the trans-canada highway, take the BARNEY'S RIVER exit to the right. Go down that road until you see the ROSS FIELD ROAD to the left. Go up the Ross Field Road to the top ( okay, near the top). We park at a four way road spot and bike up the road. The parking spot is not defined so what ever works. We then bike to the TOWER ROAD (ie: the microwave tower access road ) and that's where you begin. Go in the tower road and up about 2km is a four wheeler path that goes in to the right - HIT IT !
Let it roll until you come to a cabin. Stop and rest, if needed. Keep going ( left down the hill ). This is called NUMBER ONE it ends at the Weaver Mountain Road.
Go to the right on Weaver Mtn Road about 100Meters and the left on NUMBER TWO. From here it gets really FUN!
You'll go through BLOOD DONOR and end up on a fire road. Up the road and to the right, then on to some power lines. Go left down the power lines and then right into the CROCKETT BRIDGE trail. Awesome run through here. ((VERY FAST )) Watch out for the bridges! Up a big climb and back on the Weave Mtn Road. Left off of #2 and NUMBER THREE starts about 1km to the right. Easy to miss the start of #3 so cruise the road until you see an opening to the right. Again it's a four wheeler trail and it's fast. The trail goes up a steep hill to the right and across a fire road. At the end of #3 there is SUICIDE HILL. You'll see some BIG rocks, slow and over you go. { A little tip for ya.... don't use the front brake or you'll eat dirt } Then hit the road and up to the left, over the hill to the cars.
Summary: Lot's of fast trail. Small % of ride is fireroad climbs btw trailheads. A fun 2-3hr ride, Not much air, but plenty of rolling trail , & railed corners . Mostly middle ring trail, Two serious granny climbs, tehnical and steep. No drop-ins.No rookies suggested 'they'll cry .

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: Lots of fast double track to make a big ride out of. Lots of babyheads so full suspension might be worth it. I did it on my rigid bike once and had sore shoulders for a week. The most spectacular obstacles are a couple of steep loose climbs, and the wicked descent at the very end. You'd better have good brake control. There is a limited amount of really tough technical sections, so a beginner should be able to handle the terrain. You can also cut out loops to make the ride shorter. There are a couple of DEEP water crossings. Wear full-fingered gloves and watch for branches whipping your arms.
Recommended Route: As described by Mason. (Hi Rob!)
Other recommended trails in the same area: Stuff in the Antigonish area, but I haven't tried it yet. Lots of trail in New Glasgow.
