Summary:
the whole trail, right up to where it forks off, and on the map goes east, up until then, it is smooth gravel. the trail itself, consists of a few large rocks, and pot holes, covered by long grass. basically two dirt ruts. (or it is when we go anyway), when you get around the last right hand turn, and out of the trees, there is the tower. (quite the view from it too.) Then it's basically downhill all the way back to merrymakedge. In my opnion only, a mountian bike is very preferred. your standard road-racing bike is not suited for this envyroment. also, watch your speed all the way back until the gravel road, because there are a few rocks that come up from nowhere. I speak from experience, from the first time I did it.

Recommended Route:
well, I started, from the beginning of the slapfoot trail,at slapfoot beach; and went along the gravel road, did the whole thing in a day, with me and my friends. (biking I mean).

any of the trails along the gravel road are awesome. they are all good in their own aspects. most of them are walking trails, and there isn't many people on them at all. their very quiet, and away from everybody. the gold mines, are my favorite along that stretch of road. it's definitely an excercise route. I love it!!

Summary:
This is a great road through some of the most beautiful country Nova Scotia has to offer. The road can be somewhat busy during the summer (hikers, cars, deer), so exercise some caution. The 40 km trip takes some endurance but is smooth riding for all skill levels. The road ends at the fire tower. You can climb to the top for a panoramic view when the ranger is not around (off season), however, the platform at top is locked to prevent parties at 100 feet. There is a rangers cabin equipted with a fire place for shelter from the elements and an outhouse. Common wildlife in the area include deer, porcupines, cyotes, and bear, however you're unlikely to encounter the latter two. Bike rentals are available at Jake's Landing.

There are a bunch of off chutes from the main trail such as Gold Mine Trail, Peskowesk Point, and Snake Lake. Keji does not permit bikes on most of it's trails, so check with the visitors centre and get a map and advice from one of the attendants.
