Westwood Ridge

Average Rating:    (4.6 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 5

First a harsh climb, fallen logs, exposed rock, a bridge or two. Then it levels out, crosses a river and becomes a network of trails all over the mountain side. **SECRET SPOT** as you go up look to your left for a goat trail near a rock cliff, it's unridable but hike it to the top and find the lookout. The view is of the town of Nanaimo, several islands, and Vancouver across the stait of georgia with all the mountains covered in snow and glory. VERY worth the trip!

just an update gang. a majority of the lower section of the first ridge has been logged (winter trail, trail of doom, etc.) and the last time i was up there, it was impassable. work is being done to reconnect the main trails, i do not believe it has affected anything from the 2nd ridge on up. anyone else has any xtra info, please post reply.
rock hard, ride free.

Summary:
many cool trails. blacks, ol stumpy, 3 creeks, and the trail of doom was just redone to name a few.
recommend you bring someone with you who has somewhat of an idea as to where to go. one can get lost up there with a few wrong turns, especially after a few hoots of herbal ridilin.

Recommended Route:
go to westwood lake public access (or take the powerlines from the abyss, morrel, etc.)park and ride.

Summary:
you can spend hours on the ridge. try getting a map or tour from a local and you can, or used to be able to go from the cinibar (?) valley, south of nanaimo all the way to the small hamlet of Lantzville just north of nanaimo.

Recommended Route:
Ian has it pretty bang on for those unfamilar with the area. **there are many other routes**

Other recommended trails in the same area:
take the trials and fire roads to labour day lake. get a map, some bug and bear spray, sleeping bag and lots of food. this trip is very cool, but takes awhile. ps: don't get lost...
