Wakefield Trail

From the parking area, ride the Galena Trail to Three Forks. A neat part of this trail is the unique cablecar crossing. Follow the gravel/dirt road to the old mining town of Sandon. Cross the bridge into Sandon and begin the long ascent of Idaho Peak Road. For about 11 km you will climb relentlessly, so make sure you are well-fueled up and feeling fit. This is not a good choice for the first ride of the season! Near the top you will enter a large, steep open meadow where the road switchbacks upward. At a fork, stay left and climb one last steep bit before reaching the flatness of parking lot #1. Relief!! Take a rest, put on your armour and point your bike down the Wakefield Trail, which is signed. The initial part of the trail can be intimidating, as it is narrow and traverses a steep sidehill with a formidable slope beneath your wheels. Not the best place to be fiddling with your suspension or admiring the view. Eyes front! The trail becomes friendlier and less exposed further down but the riding is always exciting, with tight switchbacks and a smattering of technical bits. The single track ends at a small clearing where there is an old truck, slowly rusting into the ground, and some old mining relics. Hang a sharp left here and continue down doubletrack all the way to the Silverton Creek Forest Service road. Turn right and follow this good road for 5 km to Silverton, where a right turn onto the highway will lead back to New Denver and a bit of uphill back to your vehicle. A very good ride!

Summary:
Huge uphill cardio fest followed by huge downhill brake burner. A 5200 foot descent which will leave your arms quivering and hands numb. This is one of the crown jewels of the Idaho Peak trail network and is great fun! Make some noise on the descent as this is classic bear country.

Recommended Route:
Most people seem to shuttle this ride, catching a lift all the way to the top and then starting down the trickiest part of the trail without warming up. By riding up the road you seriously earn every foot of the descent. Of course, if you start with the Galena Trail in New Denver you are pedalling up about 5000 feet or so as well. Take your pick.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The North Ridge trail drops straight off the summit of Idaho Peak at the fire lookout and offers an unforgettable descent on old roads and excellent singletrack. Highly recommended!! BC Parks is becoming quite unhappy about bike traffic on the final trail to the lookout from the parking area, so PLEASE, hike your bike the final distance and always yield the trail to hikers. Be courteous! If we lose access to the top then we lose access to a classic BC ride.
