Kimbol/Kuskanax Trail

An adventure trail of awesome character, a true gem! If you''ve ridden the final approach km''s then you will be nicely warmed up for the entertainment ahead. Drop down to the right off the road onto a doubletrack which descends a short slope and enters a beautiful forest of giant cedars and firs. Look for a cairn and flagging at the point where the trail levels off and turns sharply left around a big cedar, not far from the start. Leave the trail and hike your bike through lush undergrowth for a short distance straight ahead until hitting a singletrack trail. This is the Kimbol Lake trail. Left leads to the lake, which is a nice sidetrip. Turn right and follow the tight, technical singletrack for several exciting km''s, negotiating rocks, roots, steeps and even some smooth fast sections! If you can clean this section then you are indeed a good rider. At one point the trail drops onto an old logging road, but immediately cross it and pick up the continuing singletrack on the other side. Where the trail descends to the source of the Nakusp Hot Springs, pick your way carefully past the thermal springs and continue on the trail a short distance to the junction with the Kuskanax Trail. Turn left here and enjoy another 8 or so km''s of great singletrack, not nearly as technical as the Kimbol Lake trail. This section of trail rolls along with a couple of stiff climbs and some fabulous downhills. A short section of fast doubletrack ends the ride at the paved Alexander Road. Turn left and follow this road to the junction with the highway, where a right turn leads back to Nakusp. Unless you have a second vehicle you will have to endure the ride back up to get your car back. Or, if you are truly hard-core, you will have started the ride from town!

Trail Directions
From Nakusp, drive north to the Hot Springs Road and reset your odometer here. Head up the Hot Springs Road to the 10.3 km mark and turn left onto the Kuskanax Creek Forest Service Road. Follow this road which is rough at first and then in good shape, keeping right at a junction at the 14.4 km mark (14.4 km from the beginning of the Hot Springs Road). Reach a junction at km 15.9 and turn right, crossing the bridge. Unless you are prone to car-shuttling, then leave your vehicle here and start riding. The road from this point is rough, overgrown and full of water-bars, strictly 4-wheel drive. Continue up this road, keeping right at a junction at 19 km (it is the only junction before the trailhead). After another 1 km start looking for a cairn which marks the start of the trail on the right (the start of the trail is at km 20.3 if you are still driving and using your odometer).
